Tea Klux Klan speaker got applause for suggesting we bring back
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 09:40 PM by brewens
a literacy test for voting. Former Congressman Tom Cancredo also claimed it was illiterate people responsible for Obama being elected.
I would be willing to bet the majority of illiterate voters in most elections vote Republican.
On Rachel Maddow today.

3. Why did most postgraduate voters pick Obama?
Usually literacy is a requirement for a postgraduate degree.

5. odd thing about literacy tests, and how they worked.
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 09:50 PM by provis99
In the South, when a white person wanted to vote, they tested their literacy by having them write their name. When a black person wanted to vote, they tested their literacy by having them translate passages from Latin, and then write essays on what the passages meant.

The point never was to ensure voters were literate, but to make sure blacks couldn't vote. And thats the kind of literacy test Tea Baggers want, too.

9. That's right. How many bubbles in a bar of soap. They weren't literacy tests
it was voter disenfrachisement.

6. Would that be in English? It sounds like these freaks will do anything...
to negate the Spanish speaking voter. They know that their racist teabaggers are scaring non-English speakers away from the Puke Party for ever so why not just take their votes away?

7. no joke here, but out of 7 Republicans in my family, maybe
1 could actually pass a basic civics test and maybe 4 could pass a literacy test. If such a things were passed, many conservative Republican voting folk would not be allowed to vote!

Oh yeah, the 1 Repub that would pass the civics and literacy test with flying colors is an aunt who is a liberal Repub, being more liberal than most Dems! She votes that way more out of tradition than anything else- still voting for the party of Lincoln!!!

8. Great idea actually. If you think about it.
How many Rethugs and 'baggers are going to make it to the voting booth if education, intelligence and awareness are required?

11. Except literacy tests are designed to be unpassable
Historically they usually had a pass grade of 100%, and included questions like "who was the third attorney general of the United States" or whatnot. If such tests were implemented, you can be damn sure there'd be pressure to take them that far and pick and choose who had to take them.

17. I was half joking, of course. However...
if the litmus test ever became education and intelligence, I'd sure like to think we'd have the edge on that. And that is not elitist thinking, that is the observation of one who has been dealing with those mean spirited dullards for almost 50 years.
