Look at a map or globe, and you see we have Iran totally surrounded
Edited on Mon Jan-29-07 09:04 PM by Elwood P Dowd
While looking at my globe tonight, I noticed we have Iran surrounded with our military. I imagine nuclear claims will be used the cover for a massive air campaign. Claims of Iran supplying arms to terrorists and insurgents in Iraq will be the cover for the ground campaign into western Iran. What is in western Iran and offshore in the Persian Gulf near Iraq? 90 billion barrels of oil reserves, plus a newly discovered field said to have 26 billion barrels in reserves.

Looking at a map of our various military positions, we now have forces stationed in Turkey, Qatar, Iraq, Afghanistan, Oman, Kuwait, Diego Garcia, Pakistan, and the Caspian Sea area of the old Soviet Union. Add the Navy buildup in the Persian Gulf, and it’s obvious the Bush/Cheney Oil Cartel plans to take control of the oil in Iran. Over 80% of their reserves are located in the western area near Iraq.

This will basically give them control of over 200 billion barrels of oil reserves. That’s over TEN TRILLION DOLLARS!

the problem of course being that the threat is traditionally supposed to be OUTSIDE the circled wagons!

2. And we basically have Canada surrounded
Iran is HUGE. We'd be stupid to try anything.

Even the fundies on the radio the other day, right after spewing about how the EU is controlled by a demon and Muslims shouldn't be allowed to hold public office, said as much. They were saying we're totally overextended around the world and we'd be out of our minds to start anything else.

When batshit insane fundies are saying the military is overextended...

4. With superior air power and nukes
we could control that limited area in western Iran. I wouldn't put anything past this bunch of batshit crazy Neocons.

10. No. It's possible that th US might be able to achieve area denial.
There is absolutely no way that the US could successfully garrison that zone, short of surrounding it with a 100+ km wide "moat" of radioactive slag. And if that were to happen China and Russia (and possibly India) would be indulging in a pissing contest over which was the first to turn DC into a glowing hole in the ground.

7. According to this link Canada is several times larger in landmass
than Iran.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/geo_are_lan-geography-area-land

But it IS much bigger than Iraq and it's in rather better shape to fight than Iraq was in 2003.
We've seen how successful Iraq has been.

8. Iran is roughly the size of Alaska
I franky suspect it would be easier to conquer Canada than Iran. Canada's population is concentrated in major cities close to our border, and a lot of the country is fairly gentle topographically.

Iran, notsomuch.

9. Nice link, but what's number 2? Mystery country?
I always thought Canada was larger than the US and even a few square feet larger than China. Maybe as the ice melts Canada is getting smaller.

6. Oh Yes! They are Surrounded! Chimp Screams KILL/BOMB/KILL
and Americans cower while waiting for Congress to reign him in. In the meantime War Ships stream to the Gulf...and the Missiles from our Allies are TRAINED ON IRAN.

It's WORLD WAR III! Unfolding before your eyes.

11. Iran’s bigger than California + Arizona + Nevada + Oregon + Washington + Idaho
It is all mountains. It has over 70 million people, most of whom live in densely populated urban areas.

By contrast Iraq is mostly flat desert with a population less than half of Iran's. Iraq is about 1/3 the size of Iran.

And we are having really "fabulous successes" in Iraq, according to Darth Cheney. :wow:

The Neocons are batshit crazy all right.

We can't do this. All we can possibly accomplish is to wreak more havoc and destruction, and eventually it WILL come back to us here at home.
