Beer May Be Good For Your Bones

Beer May Be Good For Your Bones

If you downed one too many while watching the Super Bowl, here's at least one reason to hold your head high: Drinking beer can be good for your health.

But seriously, a new analysis of 100 commercial beers shows the hoppy beverage is a significant source of dietary silicon, a key ingredient for bone health.

Though past research has suggested beer is chockfull of silicon, little was known about how silicon levels varied with the type of beer and malting process used. So a pair of researchers took one for the team and ran chemical analyses on beer's raw ingredients. They also picked up 100 commercial beers from the grocery store and measured the silicon content.

The silicon content of the beers ranged from 6.4 mg/L to 56.5 mg/L, with an average of 30 mg/L. Two beers are the equivalent of just under a half liter, so a person could get 30 mg of the nutrient from two beers. And while there is no official recommendation for daily silicon uptake, the researchers say, in the United States, individuals consume between 20 and 50 mg of silicon each day.

However, other studies show that consuming more than one or two alcoholic beverages a day may be, overall, bad for health. ...............

2. Well, there is beer (imported and microwbrew) and then there is
watery swill produced by the American big "breweries".... I'd like to see a breakdown by type for this and other potential micronutrients.

7. Other good dietary sources of silicon (you probably are getting)
Foods: Oatmeal, high fiber cereals, nuts, grains, wine, beer

I think the folks who probably need to be concerned are those on gluten free diets..

12. There's a lot of very good domestic pale ales. Look at ales from Great Lakes
Brewery, Bells Brewery, Founders, Stone, St Louis Brewery (Schlafly), and others. IPA's and APA might be bitter to some, so look for dry hopped Ales.
My favorite Pale Ales are Great Lakes Burning River Ale, Schlafly dry hopped APA, Founders Centennial IPA, Stone Pale Ale and IPA are nice too. Bells Two Hearted Ale is for the hops lover. It has a nice citrus tang.

This site is very good: http://beeradvocate.com/ Look to the left for beer styles and look for the Pale Ales. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style
On the right side when you are looking at a particular beer you will see "find it." Look to see if it is sold in your area.

The beers from the big breweries are adulterated with rice and other such things to keep a consistent experience year after year. They are also foreign owned. Some use hops extract, not the whole hops.

Support your local brewery. Generally they put out a pure, high quality product. You may pay more, but you are getting a lot more for your money. The Schlafly APA is probably the least expensive. Sierra Nevada is a very good introduction to the world of Pale Ale, and is priced near the Schlafly.

The Schlafly Centennial ESB kicks ass.

The "Centennial" probably refers to the style of hops used.

BTW, if you like Porters, Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald is as good as it gets. I know, it doesn't have the silicon of the pale ales, but it so good.
