The impact of advertising on the Super Bowl is a disaster.
The TV producers control the game, to such a degree, that football only comes in brief slices between a gluttony of commercials. This TV control changes the continuity of the game, with respect to timing and tempo. As a viewer you lose a coherent comprehension of what has, or is happening. I stopped watching at halftime yesterday and determined that the best way to understand the game is to read about it in the next day newspaper.

2. My step-dad couldn't stand it...
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 10:43 AM by BolivarianHero
He saw it as 3 seconds of football, 3 minutes of commentary, and tons of lame Canadian ads. I'm not a fan either, really. It's the first game I've sat through in 5 years...rofl

3. Oh, another "I'm not watching the Super Bowl so I'm better than you" post
Well, since you turned off the show at half-time, you missed the best play of the game.

5. "Better then You" was not the message.
The message is the control that TV producers have on the game.

11. I fully agree with the OP> the same problem happened on A&E which USED to be uninterrupted
movies. And Brava. I can no longer watch movies on tv. It is impossible to keep the thread of a story going when interrupted so many times.

4. I disagree - it was a GREAT game and the commercials were mostly invisible...
to the crowd I had here last night.

I think CBS did a great job with the GAME telecast, with a minimum of shots of famous people in luxury boxes and other junk.
Granted, they walked into a shit storm with the flap about the commercials, but they did a great job with the GAME.
If you didn't see the shot of Drew Brees holding his very young son in his arms at the end of the game, you missed a touching moment.

12. that's because you admit to having a crowd and a party going on. Enough distractions to make
the game and the lack of continuity acceptable.

In other words, the game was largely background noise to your social event.

15. Wrong Detective Wampus -
It was all guys and there was only on priority on everyones agenda and it was the game.
However, they were distracted by the ear splitting volume I cranked the surround sound up to as THE WHO took the stage for the halftime show.

"Hope I die before I get old" indeed.

When New Orleans pulled the onside kick and recovered at the start of the second half - we had a minor eruption.

Again, Drew Brees with tears running down his face, holding his one year old son with confetti streaming down around him, got to most of the hard core guys watching with me.

Great game, great day, great food, great company, great music, who could ask for anything more?

6. I thought that game would never end. I had it playing while I did productive things.
I had the TV on in the house and in the shop all day.

I ran errands, poured some concrete, went to a couple fish stores to find new stock for my salt water tank, ran new bell wire for the doorbell...

And whenever I paused to see the game, it was commentary, commercials, bullshit, half time, etc.

Did they actually play any football???

13. Cool tank.
How many gallons?

I have a 30gal freshwater tank with lots of plants, snails, and about 6 assorted fish. I want to go to saltwater but everyone tells me its a lot of work. Got any tips?

9. "Continuity of the game" should not be spoken in the same sentence with "football".
And I like football, but it's not a continuous game, compared to soccer, hockey, or basketball. Football is a made-for-TV game, intentionally or unintentionally, it does not matter. A marriage made in corporate heaven.

16. Record it on Dish...create your own "tape-delay" and then whiz thru commercials
That's pretty much what my husband did yesterday..
