HOW RICH ARE YOU?

Every year we gaze enviously at the lists of the richest people in world.
Wondering what it would be like to have that sort of cash. But where
would you sit on one of those lists? Here's your chance to find out.

Just enter your annual income into the box below and hit 'show me the money':

1. Not this shit again. Sure, let's just look at income and not cost of living.
What people earn in some other countries would not keep a cat alive here in the US.

19. True, but people only realize that when they need to.
When they're not rich in the US but rich by comparison with the majority of the world's population, it's self defense to point out that things are more expensive in the US so we're not really *that* rich.

It's mostly a crock, of course. Compared to the Czech Republic, for instance, most Americans are well off. Compared to the top 10% of Americans, most Americans aren't (obviously enough). But we'd rather compare ourselves with those we envy than be grateful for how much more we have than most. It's a cultural thing. It also allows us to feel wronged instead of guilty for not helping the poor more. It's another cultural thing.

Of course, there's the same kind of "not really comparable" issue when people compare US military expenses with the rest of the world's. Then they don't compare what US soldiers get paid versus what Chinese soldiers get paid, or what research in the US costs versus comparable hours of research in Russia. No, then it's strictly "convert all other other official budgets to dollars and do a straight comparison." I think the US would still come out #1, but the gap would shrink quite a bit.

21. It might make you feel good to compare, but it's still pretty meaningless.
Sure, lots of people live on $1 a day. But in China, for example, your housing is often provided by the state or your employer, you get free lunch at work, food costs 1/10th of what it does in the US and you don't have to pay for health care. So you could be making quite a few more dollars a day than the Chinese person in the US and still be materially worse off in terms of food security.

Plus in many countries, it is still relatively easy to forage or grow crops on unclaimed land. If you live in some parts of Africa and don't have enough food to eat, you can try fishing or trapping birds, gathering fruit and nuts or planting a small garden in the bush. But in the US, you need to pay for permits to hunt or fish and you aren't allowed to gather on private property, which is most property within walking distance of the urban poor. And most people don't have the survival skills to feed themselves in the wild, even if they did have access to sources of food in the countryside. So the poor person in America has a harder time supplementing a poverty diet with foods they caught, gathered or grew themselves.

And income means nothing without context. How much debt did you have to acquire to achieve that income? Many countries, such as France, provide free tertiary education and health care. You may be making half the salary, but you don't have to pay off tens of thousands of dollars of debt either.

I'm in the top 69.71% richest people in the world, but I'll bet many people below me in other countries enjoyed a higher overall standard of living on the same amount expressed in US$.

16. He is going to CA soon then off to Iraq, Other one is going back to boot camp
He came home from it - had some personal issues with his mom dying and such. Got an honorable discharge but is heading back at end of month.

My other son, that is a different situation, one I have thought a lot about today.

Not even sure where to start....

20. this just shows how desperately poor most people are, If you put in $1,000.00 US
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 12:31 AM by Motown_Johnny
you are still in the top 44%

yes, If you make one thousand dollars a year you are in the top 44% in the world

Edit to add

If you put in the US Poverty level number of about $11,000.00 you are still in the top 13%

How sad is that? People in the US who live in poverty are still more wealthy than almost 87% of the world.

22. I am a TRULY rich man. Life has smiled on me.
I don't have a lot... but I have all that a real man could ever want.

First, I have the love of a woman who could have had her choice of men, simply because she is the kind of woman who turns heads when she walks into the room. Somehow, for some strange reason, she chose ME. She is first and foremost the reason I do what I do. I don't make a move without wondering to myself whether or not it's something she would approve of, and even then, I don't make a decision that's truly important without bouncing it off of her first. She's my THIRD and last wife.

Second, I was blessed with a child 18 years ago who has never failed to make me proud, either with her grades or her personal choices. Last winter, during a text message session, she told me she was gay. I breathed a sigh of relief, and told her as much, as I was afraid she was going to tell me she was either dropping out of school, or becoming a vegetarian.

Third, I live on the top of a mountain outside of Los Angeles. I'm semi-retired, and work when I want.

Lastly, I have a Harley that most Harley riders fawn over because it's so well taken care of, that I've ridden from L.A. to northern Idaho and from L.A. to San Antonio, a boat that stays in a slip less than two minutes from my house that I fish in at least three times a week (between April and December), and a motorhome that I can, when the mood strikes me, take anywhere I want.

I've never made more than 68K in one year in my life. I made good investments and good decisions. I ain't rich, but I feel like a rich man.
