Republicans recruit novices for Congress
WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Republican operatives hope political novices running for the U.S. Congress will tap into voter anger and help the party score gains this fall, observers say.
The new crop of candidates includes Scott Rigell, a Virginia Beach car dealer, Bruce O'Donoghue of Florida, owner of a traffic-light company, and Jon Runyan, a former NFL player running in a South Jersey district, The Wall Street Journal reported. Stephen Fincher, a farmer, gospel singer and candidate, has a Web site with the headline "My roots run deep in Tennessee, not in politics."
Political newcomers have done well when the House of Representatives changed hands. In 1994, 73 freshman Republicans were elected, 55 percent of them in their first run for office, while in 2006, 45 percent of the successful Democratic newcomers were novices.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report is forecasting the Republicans will cut deep into the Democratic majority this year, picking up 25 to 35 seats, but falling short of the 40 seats needed to become the majority party.
