Bravo Judge Hall! Judge: Pratt Can't Move Jobs Out of Conn.

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: February 5, 2010

Filed at 9:50 p.m. ET

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) -- A federal judge in Connecticut has sided with a Machinists union in its legal fight to block jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney from moving 1,000 jobs out of the state.

U.S. District Judge Janet Hall issued a permanent injunction Friday, stopping the company's plans to shift the jobs to Columbus, Ga., Japan and Singapore.

The Machinists union, which represents 3,700 workers, sued to block the subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. from moving the jobs elsewhere. It accused Pratt & Whitney of failing to comply with the contract that required it to do everything possible to preserve the jobs.

Executives testified in court they had no alternative but to shut two Connecticut plants. They insisted they followed the contract. The East Hartford-based company did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

1. Imagine if others had such nerve, especially on the national front.
We might would have a sustainable future with such an attituide. Otherwise, we are headed to third world status.

3. There's the solution to job out-sourcing. Have a judge make it stop.

On edit, I know that isn't the way it works, but it would be nice.

5. This corporation has significant federal contracts
Always happy to see companies rewarding the federal government by moving their operations overseas.

:sarcasm:

7. Good point.
If Obama is so concerned about jobs being moved overseas, why couldn't he insist on throwing some fed contracts only to onshore businesses.
For the size of those contracts, it would behoove companies to move back.

8. That would be protectionism
and despite the fact, every other sane democracy in the world does it, it is a dirty word in the United States....somehow.

6. My mother in law and her boyfriend work there. They have been trying to cut jobs for awhile.
I have no idea how long they will stay at the company. Good for the judge, great ruling.
