New pint glasses aimed at curbing violence
New pint glasses aimed at curbing violence

LONDON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A British official is praising a pair of prototype shatterproof pint glasses being tested for their durability to reduce injuries from bar violence.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said the glasses, created by company Design Bridge, are aimed at curbing the estimated 87,000 broken-glass attacks in Britain each year, The Independent reported Friday.

"Having that weapon in your hand is an enormous part of why these injuries take place in the first instance," Johnson said.

Johnson said the first prototype, dubbed "Glass Plus," is single layer of glass with a resin coating on the inside, and the second, "Thin Wall," features two layers of glass held together by resin. He said the designs were based on the windshields of cars.

5. Now they just need to seal the top
so you can't put any beer in it. That'll really curb the violence.

9. I'm beginning to understand why they banned firearms there

Any society that violent shouldn't have access to deadlier weapons if they can't be trusted with a glass. I'm guessing it's illegal to have a pocket knife there also.

10. Pocket knives? They're talking about banning kitchen knives.
Even butterknives are regulated as deadly weapons.

And yet, the further they slide into being a national security state, the less safe they are. Hell, it's not even legal for someone in the UK to defend themselves against an intruder in their own home, and a criminal can sue for injuries sustained while committing a crime.

11. Probably not the glass that is causing the problems
What is wrong with them that a nation of adults can't handle not acting like children?
