Youngstown murderer of 2 put to death
Man was 21, high when he killed in '94
The killings by Mark A. Brown, 37, at an Arab-owned shop imitated the movie Menace II Society.
LUCASVILLE, Ohio -- Strapped to the lethal injection table, IV tubes hooked to both arms, staring silently at the ceiling, Mark A. Brown looked nothing like the brash, loud-talking, wild-eyed young killer he emulated from the movie Menace II Society.
Those wild days came to a deadly conclusion on Jan. 28, 1994, when Brown, high on Valium, marijuana and wine, gunned down the owner and an employee of a Youngstown neighborhood market.
Brown paid the ultimate price yesterday when he was executed at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville. Sixteen years of litigation capped by a last-minute flurry of appeals in state and federal courts delayed but did not stop his date with death.
Brown, 37, was declared dead at 10:49 a.m. He quickly succumbed to a single, massive dose of thiopental sodium, a powerful anesthetic. The chemical started flowing into his veins about 10:40 a.m. Just a minute later, Brown closed his eyes and yawned. After that, he was silent and motionless.
