100-YEAR-OLD SCOTCH FOUND IN ANTARCTIC
5 February 2010

This Scotch has been on the rocks for a century.

Five crates of Scotch whisky and two of brandy have been recovered by a team restoring an Antarctic hut used more than 100 years ago by famed polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.

Ice cracked some of the bottles that had been left there in 1909, but the restorers said Friday they are confident the five crates contain intact bottles "given liquid can be heard when the crates are moved."

New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust team leader Al Fastier said the team thought there were two crates and were amazed to find five.

2. Well, fortune favors the bold
I guess that's why I'm sitting here with instant lemonade instead of 100 year old Antarctic scotch.

6. I bet his team wished they had that.
It would have really helped to break up the monotony of 2 years of Elephant island penguin meat.

8. Shackleton gone, Spirit lives on
Lone survivor found straight away on ice just the way God intended. Let's hope the reason that Mackinlay & Co is no more due to the rot gut that then doomed the Shackleton.

11. 100 years?
It might be 100 years old, but it isn't a 100 year old scotch. Saying it is a 100 year old scotch implies that it has been aged in a hardwood cask for 100 years. Simply sitting in a bottle will not make it taste better. Maybe if it was wine, but scotch doesn't work that way.

18. George W Bush has been to Antarctica?
...... Oh what am I thinking. That bottle would be quite empty if he'd been there.
