New movement afoot to "buy Christian" to rescue the "Christian economy"
Edited on Wed Feb-03-10 04:03 PM by Bluebear
To each their own, I guess.

====

Do You Buy Christian?

When was the last time you made a conscious decision to make a sure your money was spent supporting another Christian? If you can answer that question at all, you are probably ahead of most of us. There was a time when people understood the impact their spending had. Years ago the concept of spending your money close to home was understood to be a vital part of supporting your local community. In the US it was especially important to buy products that were made in the USA. In today's so called global economy that concept has been nearly erased. We are more than willing to drive across the metro area to save some cash on our new television, and many of us look for something on eBay® before we even walk into a local retailer. We even ship our jobs to other countries because it helps us reduce costs, raise profits, and supposedly lower prices. That being said, I bet you think I am crazy for asking if you buy Christian.

I am a bit crazy, but that's ok. Truth is - I am just crazy enough to raise a topic that could not only help Christians all over our world but will, no doubt, draw fire from certain people opposed to the idea. I'm ok with that because those are the same people who would just assume Christians keep their mouths shut and their crazy morals and ideals to themselves.

All I want to do is make you think; actually, I want you to imagine. Imagine the impact your support could have on the Christian economy. Yes, I said the Christian economy. There is an economic cycle for just about every social group in society, and Christians are no different than the rest. At its simplest form it's as basic as money in versus money out. In reality, it is much more important than that...

I hope that you will join me in an attempt to bolster the Christian economy. This is a real opportunity to impact our world in the way Jesus commanded us. The more money we consciously invest into our economy with Christian businesses and business people, the more people they employ, and the more money that is given to our churches and ministries. The bottom line is more people are reached for Christ.

Now you are halfway there.

Then you have to believe that those selling you the product would not sell you something worth less than you paid for it.

In the meantime, they want you to try to be sure the proprietors of businesses you patronize are Christian.

"Real Christians" of course, not posers.

hey so do those Christian stores only cater to Christian customers? Or do they want to sell to all denominations? Do they purchase inventory only from Christian MFG's and wholesalers, or do they buy from the guy that provides them the greatest savings? I mean, they want their fish and their bread as well?

5. Here's the working link, Bluebear:
:P

http://www.christianpost.com/blogs/biblicalmind/2010/02/do-you-buy-christian-03/index.html

Here are the suggestions for buying Christian (I was confused, like are there Christian lawnmowers, for example?):

...Here are a few suggestions on what we can do. Let's start with the big things, making certain that we get these correct. Take a look at your major purchases such as homes, cars, investments, insurance, and education. Make a commitment to only do business with Christians in these areas first. Next time you buy a car, purchase it from a Christian car salesman, same thing with a home, mortgage, or insurance. If you are not sure where to find a Christian business person, just ask around at church. If that doesn't work, look in the yellow pages for a professional who identifies him/herself as a Christian.

You can also look for Christian businesses online. Because I am so passionate about this, my organization, Men of Jesus, is starting to build an online directory of Christian businesses and business people. You can find it at www.menofjesus.org.
If we all make a commitment to use our spending power wisely with our large purchases, the little ones will become easier as well. If you already have a Christian insurance agent, then next time you get your hair cut find a Christian hair dresser or barber and tell them why you are doing business with them.

If you are willing to spend the time and effort, I bet you can find a Christian businessperson for just about everything you need.
Remember buying Christian is about supporting our faith. It's about having a common purpose and being faithful managers of our blessings. It requires a conscious decision and a pro-active approach. Most importantly it is about equipping the body of Christ to reach people and spread the good news. I bet you never thought you could do that by spending money.

Edited on Thu Feb-04-10 09:59 AM by cascadiance
There is one product they might buy, Bolthouse Farms juices, which I've already been boycotting, even though its sold by Costco. I think we might even want to encourage Costco to avoid selling their stuff.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=221x78754

The former owner of this firm was a big time funder of right wing causes...

So if you're tempted to buy a bottle of Bolthouse on the shelf at Costco next time, go "Naked" instead (pardon the pun)!

If a customer feels the need to point out that they're a Christian, you're probably going to get screwed.
The chances of your getting screwed increase exponentially for each time they reference their religion after the first one.
If it's a preacher and they follow every sentence with "Praise *" your chances of getting paid drop to zero right off the bat.

goods. I am looking for the cheapest price and yet have quality of the items. I know you can have good business people who aren't christains just as well as they are christains. I am not asking such a private thing of a business. The next thing you know Jew will sell only to Jew, Catholic will sell only to Catholic and so on. This is america and we still have freedom of choice. Look to corporations that have ruined this country. Look no further than WalMart, Inc. They strangle companies and force them to sell their wares cheaper at their stores or otherwise they can't sell their wares. This WalMart is suppose to be a christain company. They don't treat their employees right. So please I will shop whatever store I want to and I don't care if the person is a christain or isn't. I want the best price and quality. By the way am catholic and I am offended you would ask people to do this as if non-believers aren't good people. I know many, many, many more terrible christains than I know non-believers.

I want to tell them to put their blessings where the sun don't shine, but I don't need the feedback hassle of it.

It just annoys me to no end. :argh:

57. "Have a blessed day"
Okay, I am a believer, but business is business and religious beliefs are private in my opinion. Lately in our neck of the woods, it's become fashionable for some people to say "have a blessed day" instead of "have a NICE day".

That comment just irks the crap outta me. I honestly don't know why it bothers me that much, but there's something about the fact that the people who say it are just going to "force" the fact that they are believers on you.

In a business situation, I don't need to to know a religious affiliation. Anyone can say he/she is a Christian, all the while screwing a consumer royally. And I personally know people who are agnostic and/or atheist who are some of the most moral people on the face of the earth.

Putting a personal label into a business situation is just plain stupid in my mind.

58. I base my reaction on the tone of the person saying such things.
If they say it by rote, without really meaning it, it's one thing. If they're just saying that they hope my day will be a good (or blessed) one, and with a smile, then it causes this atheist no harm, so I take no offense from it.

76. I heard "Have a blessed day!" when I called my insurance agent.
That phrase bugs me too.

I needed to change the insurance on my house to dwelling/fire, as I was renting it out, instead of living in it. The contents did not need to be insured. That is the renters' responsibility.

The girl I talked to was an idiot. She did not understand the concept. So nothing happened.
Then I told her I needed to insure my other house which I have moved into, which is in another county. She asked me how old it was. I said "The oldest deed I have for the property is 1882".
She said, "Oh we can't insure that, it's too old".

:wtf:

I changed both policies to another agent in another county and another company, because the ignorama (female) just couldn't handle the concepts.

I wrote the agent a letter and told him that by his hiring of an incompetent that he had lost a longtime satisfied customer, and lost future profits.

So that problem solved itself through incompetence.

59. I see the Jesus fish or a cross without a bleeding Jesus
and I tend to head for the door. Business people who proclaim what wonderful Christians they are don't have a great track record where I'm concerned.

The crosses with the bleeding Jesus mean they're Catholic, so I give them more of a chance, but I still count my change very carefully. Catholics have a better track record, but only just.

People who have to tell you how rich they are, how educated they are, and how religious they are generally are unable to demonstrate any of those in reality. It's wise to avoid them.

especially when it has the bleeding man on it.

I would prefer something that didn't groove on death. I would prefer something that celebrated life.

I don't get to make their rules, though. I'll just continue to envision little gold electric chairs on necklaces every time I see a golden cross.

107. My daughter didn't realize she was being prostylized to at camp
For two years now my atheist daughter has attended a Mormon Christian camp. She has no interest in the church. Our neighbors are mormon and they invited her and she thought it would be fun. The second year someone said they were surprised she came back. It appears there was this one girl being very nice to her and asking her questions and sharing her testimony with my daughter. My daughter just thought she was being nice. When this other girl said she was surprised to see her back my daughter asked her why. She said because that girl was trying to convert you. She didn't realize being nice was one of their tactics of conversion. I remember once someone flat out lied to me to get me to sit down to listen to a testimony. They said they were conducting a religious survey. It was not a survey. As soon as I sat down he started trying to convert me. I didn't call him on it although I probably should have. I was nice and polite and when he left I threw the pamphlet away. It is that kind of stuff that makes most non-Christians weary of Christians.

would be to put up signs on non-christian businesses, advising good christians to not patronize them.

Or maybe, instead of signs, just easily recognized symbols - Star of David, Crescent Moon, pink triangles...you know, just so people will know.

... with the people who feel the need to display them in the Yellow Pages. If someone comes recommended by a friend as to integrity, ethics, and quality, that's different. But the fishy alone? No thanks.

If my plumber were to tell me he was "born again" I'd have to bite my tongue to keep from saying that in our family we think we were "born right the first time" or possibly "born again and again and again." Would such a person enjoy this exchange? Somehow I think not.

In my long experience, people who flaunt their religion are *not* more likely to be honest and reliable than anyone else. And if they actually expect to receive special treatment because of it -- not a good sign, really.

I don't think Jesus the penniless preacher would think much of the "Christian economy." He wanted his followers to share all things in common.

There's a few law firms in Texas who do that.

They quote some verse and then say "Jesus wants you to get paid, see!"

87. Upon reflection, I've decided the ministers are behind it.
The notion of "prosperity Christianity" is part of selling specific evangelists to the public. They aggressively insist upon tithing by their members, and screen members for that. As their membership's revenues fall off, so does the preacher's cut of the action. It's in the preacher's best interest to encourage all members to do business with each other. That helps other members make money, and that accrues to the benefit of the preacher.

And when thou pray, thou shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in
the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But thou, when thou pray, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret…

93. Crosses and cute little fishies....
I am a bad influence, I'm afraid.

When Mr P and I first got together more than 15 years ago, he wore a gold cross around his neck, and he used checks with little fishies on them. He even sometimes went to church.

Now, all these years later, the gold cross is gone and so are the checks with the fishies. He hasn't stepped foot in a church in years.

I don't know how, but I've turned him into a Heathen.

So anyway, we both tend to look upon blatant expressions of religion as vulgar. Yes, we have religious friends, but preaching and proselytizing is off limits.

And...I don't know about him, but I steer clear of any merchants who blatantly advertise their religion.

97. I'd prefer to keep my money here in the dirty heathen economy.
Do You Buy Heathen?

When was the last time you made a conscious decision to make a sure your money was spent supporting another dirty heathen? If you can answer that question at all, you are probably ahead of most of us. There was a time when people understood the impact their spending had. Years ago the concept of spending your money close to home was understood to be a vital part of supporting your local community. In the US it was especially important to buy products that were made in the USA. In today's so called global economy that concept has been nearly erased. We are more than willing to drive across the metro area to save some cash on our new television, and many of us look for something on eBay® before we even walk into a local retailer. We even ship our jobs to other countries because it helps us reduce costs, raise profits, and supposedly lower prices. That being said, I bet you think I am crazy for asking if you buy from your fellow dirty heathens.

I am a bit crazy, but that's ok. Truth is - I am just crazy enough to raise a topic that could not only help dirty heathens like ourselves all over our world but will, no doubt, draw fire from certain people opposed to the idea. I'm ok with that because those are the same people who would just assume dirty heathens keep their mouths shut and their crazy drunken rambling and sexual innuendo to themselves.

All I want to do is make you think; actually, I want you to imagine. Imagine the impact your support could have on the dirty heathen economy. Yes, I said the dirty heathen economy. There is an economic cycle for just about every social group in society, and dirty heathens are no different than the rest. At its simplest form it's as basic as money in versus money out. In reality, it is much more important than that...

I hope that you will join me in an attempt to bolster the dirty heathen economy. This is a real opportunity to impact our world in the way backmasked sounds on classic rock albums once commanded us. The more money we consciously invest into our economy with dirty heathen businesses and business people, the more people they employ, and the more money that is given to our liquor stores and adult-oriented businesses. The bottom line is more people are lit enough to party.
