CBS keeps Tebow ad but kills gay dating website ad w 2 men kissing - cites stds and practices.

(CBS) CBS has rejected an ad from gay dating site Mancrunch.com, telling the site that the ad "is not within the Network's Broadcast Standards for Super Bowl Sunday," James Hibberd reports at The Live Feed.

CBS released the following statement: "After reviewing the ad - which is entirely commercial in nature - our Standards and Practices department decided not to accept this particular spot. As always, we are open to working with the client on alternative submissions."

The dating site for gay men had hoped it could fork over $2 million or more to CBS in return for 30 seconds of air time.

Hibberd reports that CBS believed ManCrunch was trying to generate free publicity by submitting an ad they knew would be rejected.

1. How did they "know" the ad would be rejected??
If so, CBS could prove them wrong and accept it.

Hate gays but accept nothing less then preaching on the public airwaves by a radical christian terrorist group.

And whats the story with Tebow's mother may be lying about the story? Was she prenant in the Phillipines, where abortion is illegal? Anybody know the story or can direct me to some info. Thanks.

3. Yeah, if she's lying it needs to be exposed,
with enough time for the word to spread before Sunday.

4. The story about Tebow's mom is false
while abortion in the Philippines is technically illegal, it is (and was) actually quite common. She could have easily gotten an abortion if she wanted.

In countries like the Philippines, where induced abortion is against the law,3* many women nevertheless seek an abortion—despite conditions that may put their health at risk—rather than give birth to children they cannot care for or do not want. A study using an indirect methodology estimated that in 1994, there were 400,000 induced abortions in the country and 80,000 women hospitalized for complications of induced abortion.4 The Department of Health of the Philippines reported that 12% of all maternal deaths in 1994 were the result of illegal abortion.5

Studies from the 1970s onward have shown that despite the law's severity, abortion appears to be widely practiced.6 Evidence from the mid-1990s indicates that Filipino women of all social classes and backgrounds are having induced abortions.7 They do so under varying circumstances, ranging from safe medical procedures performed for better-off women by trained personnel to procedures in extremely unsafe conditions for poor women who cannot afford to pay for a surgical abortion. The evidence of a survey of health professionals in the mid-1990s suggests that about one-third of women seeking an abortion obtain it from a doctor or nurse, but a high proportion of women consult traditional practitioners or attempt to induce the abortion themselves.

5. This DU thread has umpteen posts re illegality of abortions in the
PI, with several posts that give the abortion rate despite that illegality.

The bottom line seems to be 'illegal' and 'not available' are not the same thing. They are available, and they happen.

2. What a great deal for Mancrunch
they will most likely get more exposure from this controversy then from actually showing the ad. I saw the ad three times at the gym this morning on various news shows. Makes you wonder if that was their plan all along.

6. About your headline...
I read the article positioned so that my jaw wouldn't hit the desk when it dropped, but the article didn't deliver as much outrage as I expected.

(Outrageous, yes, but not what the headline promised.)

Then I realized you were using "stds" as an abbreviation for "standards"

If CBS had cited STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and gay "practices" as a reason to not air an ad of two men kissing...

Anyway, it's bad enough as is, I guess.

7. I had an interesting facebook clash with some dumbass about this very subject
The names have been changed to protect the stupid.

Lady OP:

CBS: Don't air anti-abortion Super Bowl ad act.credoaction.com

Stop CBS from airing anti-abortion Super Bowl ad from Focus on the Family. Urge them to enforce their "no advocacy" policy and deny the anti-abortion ad!

The Animator: If they air that piece of crap and not the pro gay marriage commercial the sheer hypocrisy could cause some sort of temporal rift...

Dumbass: What happened to freedom of speech? If you don't want to air something get your own tv station!! Don't get me wrong I hate babies & 98% of them should be aborted but who are we to tell anyone what they can or can't air?!?! Doesn't logo & Ellen air enough gay shit already?!?!?!? No one gives a shit if you're gay or pregnant, get a fucking clue people!!!

The Animator: Todd, the problem is that they aren't treating all the commercials equally. I can understand having a policy of not wanting to air adds because they could be divisive or controversial, but to air one divisive and controversial add, yet ban another is blatantly hypocritical. I'm allowed to call out hypocrisy when I see it... that free speech thing and all... FYI, I am neither gay, nor pregnant, and yet I care...

Dumbass: They own the place they don't have to treat shit equally this is AMERICA home of the FREE!!!!! Any business has the right to refuse service to anyone they choose to. They would be more hypocritical if they aired shit they disagreed with. You don't believe in free speech if you can't listen to someone trash everything you've ever believed in! If you hate the constitution just say so.

The Animator: Yeah, yeah sure, because I value equality, clearly I must hate America. This isn't a first amendment issue. This is consumer advocacy. CBS is a business, we as potential Superbowl viewers are consumers. This is consumer demand, Economics 101.

Rule number one, give the public what they want. We, the public, as informed consumers, are attempting to... See More inform CBS that a significant portion of it's Superbowl viewership would be inclined to change the channel if this ad airs.

If you read the two sentences under Sheina's link post, you will see that CBS actually already has a "no advocacy" policy. They have that policy in place to keep themselves from potentially alienating large portions of their audience. That's their policy, all we are asking is that they apply that same policy equally. It's not censorship, which I do have a big problem with by the way, it's just business.

Dumbass: Bullshit! It's a case of you're an adult, idiot!!! If you run your life according to commercials you deserve what you get. If you don't like it don't pay attention or even better don't fucking watch it! I can tell you're a "potential" superbowl watcher also don't worry. This country is going to shit because of petty fucks like you. You have fingers if you don't like something on tv press the mute button or turn the channel back to jersey shore.

The Animator: Yes I am, in fact, an adult. Well spotted. Notice I'm not the one flinging insults here. Jersey Shore?... Seriously? As for the country going to shit... I can say with certainty that a "petty fuck" like me is in no way responsible for the mess this country currently in.

In fact, I liken our current national condition to slowly, groggily, waking up from an eight year long nightmare, and that we are just now beginning to regain our senses.

I could go through the very, very, long list of fumbles that got us to where we are, but I have neither the time, nor the inclination, since I feel the effort would simply be ignored. ... See More

In response to your 'just don't pay attention' solution. I believe there are better, more effective ways of bringing about positive change than simply burying my head in the sand and pretending that the crumbling world around me doesn't exist. I have the power to do more than just hit the mute button, I can actually get off my ass and do something.

10. hoax or not it showed CBS's true colors
they didn't say we reject the ad because we think it is fake, they said we reject the ad because we deem it to be unfit for our audience to see, soley due to two guys kissing.

11. They may have never even submitted the ad
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 02:52 PM by Ian David
>snip>

When this writer first starting coming across the story on Thursday and reading the content of the FOX News article, the built in journalist and former CBS employee antenna went up and I figured something was afoot and not correct, which is why until this posting, there has been no mention of CBS/Man Crunch.

What lead me to that observation if you will, and decided not to join the fray of the many, was the information regarding CBS and Man Crunch, the information of which was provided by Man Crunch. Every time “a CBS rep” was written it was done so with no name. Also in some of the articles there was an unsettling contradiction in what CBS was purported to be saying and Man Crunch’s statements and offering of information.

Even the “statement from CBS” as to why the ad would not be accepted was information provided by Man Crunch and again with no names of CBS spokesman or representatives. So needless to say the whole thing didn’t sit right and I opted not to add this blog to the ever growing media taking this all in.
