Mayor Wants Jesus Prayers and Christian Community

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local-beat/Lancaster-Mayor-Wants-Jesus-Prayers-and-Christian-Community-83161862.html

Mayor and city council member alienate Muslims in Lancaster

The mayor of Lancaster has urged its residents to approve Christian-specific prayers at public meetings, in an effort to "grow" the sixth-largest city in Los Angeles County into a "Christian community," it was reported today.

Lancaster residents were urged by Mayor R. Rex Parris in a state-of-the-city speech to support a city ballot measure that would authorize daily prayers at city council meetings.

"We are growing a Christian community, and don't let anybody shy away from that," he said in his speech, according to the Antelope Valley Press.

In a later interview with the Daily News, Parris expressed surprise that some religious leaders object to prayers to Jesus at city meetings, and blamed opposition on activists who "want a fight," the newspaper reported. "They want their 15 minutes of fame."

One week ago, Lancaster city council member Sherry Marquez wrote on her Facebook page that the beheading murder of an Islamic woman by her husband in New York shows that vicious murders are what Muslims embrace.

"This is what the Muslim religion is all about -- the beheadings, honor killings are just the beginning of what is about to come to the USA," she reportedly wrote on the Web Jan. 23. "We are told this is a small minority of Muslim's (sic) in America, but it is truly what they are all about."

The Lancaster mayor is running for re-election and supports the prayer ordinance, the newspaper reported. The city council has already placed a large "In God We Trust" motto across the wall in the city council chambers.

3. Uff da! Lancaster is not a particularly nice place. Full of
wingers, especially outside of town. An ugly place, pretty much.

4. Now, imagine if that was in reverse, and this was a Muslim mayor. Or a Wiccan, for that matter.
Or anyone outside of a Christian religion. Can you imagine the righteous indignation we'd all have to hear shouted from the mountain tops by these very same people? :eyes:

17. A Muslim problem?
A. Muslim. Problem.

We have certain laws and culture here. Hmmm... so, who else doesn't fit into our "melting pot"? And who decides who fits and who goes? Who gets to choose what the "culture" is or whose culture we're all adopting? So many questions arise when one group is told they don't fit in, so get out.

6. Uh, Mayor Parris?
You can already grow a "Christian community" in Lancaster. It's called a church. As for “vicious murders,” one nut in New York lopping off his wife’s head using religion as his excuse hardly typifies all of Islam. Unless, of course, you’re willing to hold Christianity to the same standard. In which case, what do you call the execution of dozens of men every year, some of them innocent, some of them essentially arbitrarily, all over the country, carried out under color of law?

8. Ever notice how the religious insane always can over look their history
while pointing out the evil of other religions? I remember not so very long ago how the religious nuts admired how muslims dealt with criminals not to mention how oppressive the christian religion is towards women and womens rights. Though a lot has been watered down over the last 200 years, there are still those who think women should never be allowed to divorce their husbands no matter how sadistic he may be or the fact that according to the nuts women are required to be subservant to their husbands every whim.

10. How many American women are murdered
by their partners everyday. To use the excuse that Islamic women are beheaded
by their husbands is beyond hypocritical. Sherry Marquez and people like her
have a very skewed view of the violence American women are exposed to.

14. Maybe they will give him mayoral control of public schools as Arne wants.
Arne Duncan messing around in NYC schools. Demands mayoral control, no parent input.

"Education Secretary Arne Duncan grew up in a school system dominated by mayoral control. He's said he loses sleep at night over Detroit Public Schools. And he's weighed in on New York City's governance structure, declaring that the city's public schools are best left in the mayor's hands.

Now, as if the education secretary doesn't have enough going on, he's wading even further—and more dramatically—into the thorny issue of local control and school governance by declaring that more big-city mayors need to take over school districts. And if the numbers don't rise, he said according to Libby Quaid's Associated Press story, he "will have failed as secretary."

UPDATED: Read Libby's latest, in-depth coverage of Duncan's statements and the reaction. This includes Duncan's expanded pledge to actually go to cities and lobby on behalf of mayoral control.

This is tough talk from a guy who is now the very-publicized face of public education—at least on the federal level. And local and state officials don't usually appreciate comments from federal officials about how to govern local school districts. This is sure to irritate some of Duncan's base of support—like teachers' unions, the Council of Great City Schools, and the school boards association."
