2. Most democrats would be highly repulsed
by the thought of joining the Republican party. You would have to pretend to be one of those.

4. They are called RINOs.
And the bottom line is that some areas are so heavily republican or democrat, that a real candidate of the other party won't have a chance at all, none. That is how blue dogs happen. Without blue dogs, those areas just wouldn't have democrats at all.

14. Even the MOST Liberal Republican is more conservative than the LEAST Liberal Democrat.

Whitehouse, Snowe and Collins make even Joe LIEberman look like Dennis Kucinich.

5. Because we can't get past their purity tests?
Unfortunately, I think Scott Brown is as close as we're going to get. He has told Republican leadership they can't expect him to vote with them in lockstep. Being from a fairly blue state, he may break with the party at times but I don't believe moderate Republicans could win anywhere but in blue states where we're have a better chance of electing Democrats.

7. I think it's a good idea and now is a good time to do it.
Not necessarily Democrats so much as real Conservatives who are moderate and reasonable. Republicans are not very unpopular right now, so good, moderate Conservatives could run on a platform of bringing the party back to being the 'Party of Lincoln'. A party that actually cares about the Constitution and the law and which is not obstructionist or populated as it is now, by extremists. And candidates who are not warmongers, but believe war should be a last resort, not a profitable enterprise.

I'd rather have a good opposition party which will compromise when necessary, with honest conservatives who challenge the wingnuts who have taken it over, that Dems posing as Republicans, although sometimes in order to save your country you might need to take extreme measures.

8. Good question.
That might be the only way to get progressive candidates elected in certain areas.

There actually used to be a fair number of liberal Republicans. Lincoln Chaffee was probably the last to hold national office.

9. Isn't it easier to simply NOT vote for the Blue Dog or DLC candidate in the primaries?
Support and vote for the Liberal/Progressive candidate in the primaries, and after a few election cycles of that the DLC and Blue Dogs will be just a bad memory. It's evident that Harold Ford see's an end of DLC influence approaching and is desperately trying to remake his public image ahead of that change.

10. If you want to reenact THE DEPARTED in the political world, good luck...
...but it's probably just easier to shore up the party with whom you've allied yourself instead of cloak-and-dagger stuff on the other side.

11. Most Democrats would find that very messy
Not to mention a very Rude and Crude way to treat our "FRIENDS" across the aisle.

Seriously, What kind of Bi-Partisanship could we expect from Republicans if we
did this ?

It would be downright impolite :nopity:
