So much for the "depressed" base:
MDP Press Release:

Caucus Turnout Exceeds 2002 and 2006 Numbers AUGUSTA- With seventy six percent of towns reporting, 2,612 Democrats have caucused, as Mainers braved the subzero wind chills to attend their local meetings. The higher than expected turnout demonstrates Democrat's commitment to organizing at the local level. Although caucus turnout is traditionally low in off year elections, the 2010 caucus exceeded both the 2002 and even the 2006 turnout. "From the smallest hamlet in Washington County to largest city in the State, today Democrats braved the blistering cold and showed up in stronger than expected numbers around Maine. Today's caucus turnout is the highest off year turnout in recent memory and serves as a strong kickoff for our 2010 election cycle, " said Arden Manning, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party. Democrats utilized the caucuses as an organizing opportunity, as Town Organizers were selected in 193 towns around the State. These Town Organizers will work in their local towns to contact voters and urge them to support Democratic Candidates in the general election. Manning continued, "Our plan is simple, we intend to compete for Democratic voters in every county in the State. We strongly believe that any Democrat can win in any town in Maine as long as he or she works hard and has local support. The results of today's caucus show the tremendous energy among Democrats in advance of the Gubernatorial Election this fall."
