Sorority chapter suspended due to hazing probe
National leaders of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority have suspended its Rutgers University chapter amid an ongoing probe of hazing allegations.
The North Carolina-based sorority took the action this week after six members of the Rutgers chapter were charged with hazing prospective pledges by paddling them and denying them food. Rutgers has also suspended the sorority.

Campus police say the incidents occurred between Jan. 18 and Jan. 25 and at least seven woman sustained some injuries, including one who sought medical attention.

One woman claimed sorority members struck her 201 times with a paddle over a week and planned another round of punishment before the allegations became public.

The six sorority members are charged with aggravated hazing, an indictable criminal offense, and could face disciplinary action and possible expulsion under the university's code of conduct. They are free on bail.

1. 30 years ago when I was in college
and pledging for a sister organization to this one, there had been major crackdowns on hazing with severe repercussions. Seems a whole new rogue generation didn't get the memo. :banghead:

4. Even when I pledged back in 1996, there were crackdowns on hazing.

The fraternities still did it, but the sororities didn't. Of course that was just at my school, but many of the girls I knew from other universities didn't go through any hazing. Some people didn't get the memo or just didn't care about it.

6. I pledged in 1997 and we didn't have hazing either
In fact, our national sorority had a strict anti hazing program. Of course, through this program, we discovered that some of our harmless traditions actually were hazing and we stopped them.

3. Yeah paddling is a euphemism in this case for "beating"
Paddling = hot.

Beating = unbelievably not hot.
