"Obama is a Coward"
I remember when that was the meme here. I'm glad I stood by him, even when many didn't. It was worth the personal hits I took.

1. Whatcha Done For Me Lately...
Kudos...but be prepared, the naysayers and backseat drivers will be back soon. It's always easier to condemn than to support a leader. The measure of a person is not how they react when the going is good, but when the chips are down. I still have criticisms of this Administration and a couple speeches haven't changed that opinion...actions will speak for themselves. But no matter what, I stand with our President and am proud of voting and supporting him.

2. He has still only proved to be a good debator/orator. He's shown

no courage yet. I wouldn't call him a coward, but if you think SOTU and this little meeting with the RNC is proof he's all you hope he is going to be, then you will likely be disappointed. He's proven that his solutions will be way too conservative, even his current idea of using TARP to fund jobs is way too small and conservative, and manly in tax cuts, not actual stimulus.

Keep hoping, you're going to need it to overcome the reality of the Blue Dem (or DINO) that he's turning out to be.

what brave or courageous thing has Obama done this past week? Not talked about, but actually done?

25. The Prime Minister of England does this all the time.
It should be done more often (with members of BOTH parties) I wouldn't exactly laud it as an example of courage. That should be a regular part of the job.

34. The reason why England does it
is because the majority coalition of the British Parliament appoints the Prime Minister to represent that coalition, and thus that person is accountable to the coalition. What the Parliament then gives, the Parliament can take away by voting no-confidence, and out the person can go (and most seem to resign before it gets that far).

In the U.S., the President is elected by the people, not the Congress, and thus is accountable to the people. However, by having Congress holding the purse-strings, a major check and balance would apply.

14. I agree with you 100, Better Today. I love the way he expresses himself but his actions
in implementing good policy will be the proof of this pudding.

I don't think the President is a coward by any shape of the imagination, but his first year in office showed that he was too willing to compromise with people who would not meet him halfway or even a quarter of the way.

When I hear him talking about Republicans joining him in the healthcare reform debate it makes me want to scream "you and the Democratic Congress have already compromised that down the drain, why get THEM involved?"

24. A president's actions are limited by the constitution
Obama used the bully pulpit.

I am trying to imagine the "actions" that posters expect - they never give details.

36. They want Obama to play the dozens with the repukes as if he doesn't
already have enough on his plate. I recognize that President Obama is a very busy man who is working furiously and earnestly to undo years of repuke mismanagement, while a bunch of crybabies sit around second-guessing his every move.

39. Here's a detail: do whatever it was the Republicans did to pass bill after fucking bill over
the so-called opposition of the Democrats.

How about some of that old-fashioned arm-twisting (detail #2). When a Blue Dog doesn't want to back the party leadership, put her/him on notice that we're going to primary her/his sorry ass, THEN DO IT. If Rahm and Debbie can primary progressive Democrats left and right in Florida, they can sure as hell do it elsewhere.

Detail #3: Everybody wants legislation passed that benefits THEIR district or state. Put the recalcitrants on notice that their requests will be ignored or deep-sixed unless they play ball.

This is politics, Treestar. Apparently you think it's all about asking politely.

17. The President cannot do miracles. . .we all know that!
But you, obviously are not helping! Keep on being negative and give up before the fight. . .

What President Obama needs NOW is all of us to be as loud and as energized as the "teabaggers," but with the class and the intelligence that our President demonstrated yesterday in front of the "best and brightest" of the GOP!

Please, stretch yourself, and try posting ONE positive comment!

31. It sounds like you're giving up the fight. I fight for principles and policies
not the President. If he can't accomplish what's best for the people in an efficient and meaningful way, then he is one of whom I'm fighting against. No giving up the fight here, my fights are the same as they were last year and the year before, and the decade before. Obama gets no pass from me if he isn't getting things done.

Miracles?!?!?! Pulease... there are many things he could've done by now to help the average people, instead he's talking about reducing the deficit on our backs instead of the backs of military complex and the thieves that swindled us all into this mess, and he's not taking actions against the BushWarCriminals, instead is backing them up and protecting them.

You're the one who's giving up the fight, not me.

7. I've been very disappointed now and again...
but I've watched this guy intently for about a year and a half now and have learned that he always comes back stronger after being hit hard, and he is an honorable man who is striving to do the right things for this country. I just hope that people continue to see that he is working hard and that his agenda is going to take some time to show results. We're still seeing much of the results of the Bush agenda still, and very little of what Obama has done, but we'll start seeing more and more as time progresses. It's disheartening watching the liberals I love jump on him at a time when he needs our support and cooperation the most. I understand the criticism, and respect other's right to voice it, but can no longer tolerate the incessant bashing from certain sources. It has crossed serious lines at DU in the past few months.

13. Good tv doesn't equal good policy
What difference does it make if the President is feisty at a GOP "retreat"? I'm pretty sure no legislation was passed there and no executive orders were signed. I'm glad he did it, and I liked what he did, but really at the end of the day, it makes no difference.

If this is a "meme" at DU, then you won't have any trouble posting links to these threads,

Or is this just another "I'm a courageous, lonely MARTYR" thread ?

19. Obama just proved what a coward that Bush was.
If that had been W there wouldn't have been anyone asking questions that hadn't signed a "Loyalty Oath" and donated over $20,000. It was a great performance and I salute Mr. Obama for hitting the liars over the head with reality. I hope it really was the beginning of the end of the GOPs attack on America.

I was proud of our elected president yesterday.

Did you think we wouldn't notice that there is still no HCR, no energy policy, we're still in two wars and still left with only a promise on DADT?

I thought the appearance was great, he looked to be the smartest person in the room, now let's see him put that big giant brain to work for the People.

23. I always wonder what they think the "courageous" thing to do would be
Probably something that would make him look like an ass.

And they never want to hold Senators' feet to the fire.

I guess it would be "courageous" for Congress to pass single-payer and the President to sign it, and then the corporations would refuse to fund the next campaign, would fund others', whom the voters would vote in rather than re-elect the congress/pres that gave them single payer - just because the voters are so stupid and helpless.

Never occurs to them that most of the nation is just not as progressive.

35. until they start doing something that benefits groups other than those who line
their campaign coffers, everything else is just a bunch of empty, meaningless posturing

what he did could be seen as a good first step, but until he backs it up with meaningful action (reducing the seven hundred billion dollar "defense" budget might be an obvious starting place), I don't much care what he says
