Massive Virtual March on Washington!! Be there!
Edited on Mon Jan-29-07 07:27 PM by Breeze54
We need your help to do something really big!!!

We're organizing a massive Virtual March on Washington

and aiming to send 1 million messages to Congress

on Thursday, February 1st.

Can you join us by signing up for a time to call your senator?

Welcome to the Virtual March on Washington

http://pol.moveon.org/virtualmarch

On Thursday, February 1st -

just days before the Senate votes on the escalation -

there's going to be a massive virtual march on Washington.

We're going to make 1 million contacts to Congress.

Can you join us? Click below to sign up to call your senators!

___________

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of Americans marched on Washington
to stop the escalation and end the war.

Now, we're launching a national effort that everyone can join from home
—bringing our message directly to Congress through a massive Virtual March on Washington.

On Thursday, February 1st — just days before the Senate votes on the escalation
— we're going to let them know where their constituents stand by flooding their
offices with 1 million messages.

We need your help to make this really big.

Can you join us by signing up for a time to call your senators?

Click below to sign up for a "shift"—a time-slot when you'll call
(we're trying to spread out the calls over the course of the day).

All you need to do to participate is schedule a time to call your senators,
and urge them to block escalation. We'll take care of the rest.
We'll even send you a text message to remind you before your shift starts if you want.

We're not just calling Congress. The virtual march is much bigger than that.
All through the week we're building energy towards the big day:

We're organizing MoveOn members to call other MoveOn members in key states—
whose senators could determine whether the resolution passes—
and getting them involved in the march.

We're pledging to get our friends and family involved in the march.

We're organizing MoveOn members in Washington, D.C. to deliver close
to 600,000 messages to the Senate opposing escalation in person.

Thursday is going to be a huge day of action all over the country.
MoveOn members, along with members of
True Majority, Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, USAction, Campus Progress
and many others are working together to make sure Congress gets the message:

Americans not only oppose escalation, but are counting on Congress to block it.

And if enough of us get involved, we can really win this vote.

Passing a bipartisan resolution opposing escalation will be the strongest stand
the Congress has taken on the war since it began. It's more than symbolic.

If we can convince a majority of senators to vote against the president's plan,
the momentum from that vote will affect the way the House of Representatives votes
— and set us up to stop the escalation completely in the coming weeks.

Most importantly, passing this resolution will give our leaders in Washington
the support they need to take action to stop the war.

Thursday is going to be a critical day in the fight to end the war.

Can you join us?

Thanks for all you do,

I'll use my landline. It's only 5 cents a minute...not to bad for ten calls.

I have text messaging but it's pay by the phone card. :(

They'll e-mail me so I won't forget to call!

I like it, that they've added texting too! Cool!

That way they can reach the younger crowd, I think! ;)

22. Early morning kick and question
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 06:09 AM by tbyg52
(I'll have a look at the MoveOn website as well, but perhaps someone here knows, and DU loads faster than anything else on the internet, which matters a lot to us dialup people....)

Is this just a plan to move the fence sitters, or are there any plans for publicity?

There's no point in my calling my senators to try to move them (although I am going to call anyway), but (assuming the number is massive, which I am doing my best to help with) I would *love* to see lots of reporting of how many phone calls they got!

Edited to add:
Can't get any info on my question from MoveOn, nor ask them a question on this issue--the only way to see the pages where the promised phone calls are logged is to sign up again, and there is no way to ask a question on this particular issue, as it doesn't show up when you select "Campaigns"--the only place it shows up is at the top of the front page. Anybody know anybody there, and feel my suggestion might be worth passing on?

Ah, I did finally find a general comment form--it was kinda buried....

But Move-On.org and Move-On Political are sort of two different actions.

They do/have different jobs, would be the best way to explain it!

What is MoveOn™?

The MoveOn family of organizations brings real Americans back into the political process.
With over 3.3 million members across America – from carpenters to stay-at-home moms to
business leaders – we work together to realize the progressive vision of our country’s
founders. MoveOn is a service – a way for busy but concerned citizens to find their
political voice in a system dominated by big money and big media.

The MoveOn family of organizations is made up of a couple of different pieces.

MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, formerly known just as
MoveOn.org, primarily focuses on education and advocacy on important national issues.

MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, is engaged in a campaign to
reform the media and other work aimed at bringing real people back into the democratic
process by making sure legislators hear their voices.

In 2002 and 2003, MoveOn.org Civic Action conducted a campaign to stop the Iraq war, as well
as campaigns to keep the federal courts moderate, support campaign finance reform, oppose
the repeal of the estate tax, and reduce America’s dependence on oil.

Over the years, MoveOn.org Civic Action has created a number of television and print
advertisements to amplify the voices of MoveOn members. You can check them out here.

------------------------

MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC, formerly known as MoveOn PAC, mobilizes
people across the country to fight important battles in Congress and help elect candidates
who reflect our values. Both organizations are entirely funded by individuals.

About MoveOn.org Political Action

MoveOn.org Political Action, one of the largest Political Action Committees in the country,
brings real Americans into politics to fight for a more progressive America and elect
progressive candidates. It conducts major campaigns, from its work to protect the Supreme
Court from a hard-right justice to its campaign to defeat the right wing and elect moderates
and progressives in 2006. But in contrast to most PACs, which funnel industry contributions
to candidates in exchange for access, MoveOn.org Political Action brings hundreds of thousands
of small donors together to elect candidates who will represent the American people.

Every member has a voice in choosing the direction for both MoveOn.org Political Action
and MoveOn.org Civic Action.

Using our ActionForum software, YOU can propose priorities and strategies.

Both organizations also take the initiative to organize quick action on other timely issues
that our members care about.

----------------

The differences may have to do with what type of 'tax' group they fall into also.

I hope that helps and I hope you will join and make some calls! :)

60. Thanks for the info
It doesn't quite answer my questions, though. (Probably because I wasn't clear..... ;) )

I was wondering if they had a place to keep track of the signups as they happenend. You see them for your state at the time you sign up, but there's no way to see them again, even just for your state (there's no way to see other states), unless you sign up again.

Second question was more regarding publicity *other* than on their website. I know it's hard (impossible) to get the corporate media to cover stuff like this, but I wondered if they were trying anyway. I'd *love* to hear a radio or TV report of how many calls were made (assuming the numbers were massive).

I did make these suggestions on their website, but it's just one email in an avalanche, I'm sure. I was wondering if anyone knew anyone there, and felt my suggestions were worth conveying.

With regard to your post below as to the apparent low-ish level of interest, I don't know. I personally am fascinated, because I've heard that *lots* of constituent calls is the best way to get their attention, which I believe.

Again, thanks for the info.

Dear MoveOn member,

Thanks so much for volunteering to call other MoveOn members tonight about Thursday's Virtual March.
Unfortunately, we've had to postpone tonight's calling. As often happens with cutting edge technology,
we've discovered a few unexpected issues that we need to work out before we can release it.

The folks who have tested the tool have told us that it's really easy to use and that connecting with
other MoveOn members is a lot of fun. And we hope to have it all ready to go for calling tomorrow
evening—we'll definitely keep you up-to-date.

Thank you again for volunteering. Thank you for your patience, and thanks for all you do.

42. Move-On has been AGAINST the War On Iraq from the get-go!
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 03:59 PM by Breeze54
MoveOn.org Political Action On this Saturday's Anti-War March in Washington DC

Statement by Tom Matzzie, Washington Director of MoveOn.org Political Action

http://www.moveon.org/press/pr/release012307.html

MoveOn supports the January 27th march to stop President Bush's troop escalation
and to demand a timetable to get U.S. troops out of Iraq this year.

President Bush's failed policy in Iraq is the top issue for our members and so we have
encouraged all of them to participate in Saturday's march. We are also providing some
scholarships for those who wish to attend but who need help with travel expenses.
Our staff will be joining many of our members and the anti-war public at the march.
Together we represent the views of the majority of the American people.

MoveOn.org is participating in United for Peace and Justice's march coalition because
we believe in the importance of joining forces around critical issues where we have a
high level of agreement. We do not agree on all of the issues addressed by UFPJ today
or in the past or some of the issues that will be aired by individual marchers,
but certainly support an end to the war in Iraq which is the main focus of the march.

"Bring Home the Troops" Petition Deliveries

http://www.flickr.com/photos/moveon/sets/1582727/show/

On Wednesday, December 14th, thousands of MoveOn members delivered over 400,000
petition signatures calling for an exit plan from Iraq to 285 congressional offices.

Events took place in every corner of the country; in Battle Creek, MI; Hays, KS;
Defiance, OH; Starkville, MS; Humble, TX; Loveland, CO; Burnsville, MN; Walterboro, SC;
Coeur d'Alene, ID; Hickory, NC; Norman, OK; Cookeville, TN; Peoria, IL; Martinsburg, WV;
Prairie du Sac, WI, to name a few places.

Volunteers say the deliveries were a resounding success.
Most events were led by delegations of veterans and military families.
More than half had media there. Together, our efforts brought Congress face to face with
the growing majority of Americans calling for a plan to bring our troops home from Iraq.

------------------

Don't be disappointed!! This IS an action to end the war!!!
And bring the troops home...NOW!!!

Right now the focus is to call about that vote!!

Opposing escalation does send the message that our continued presence in Iraq is still ok on some level.

BTW...I am aware of the history of Moveon's positions as I have been a member since they came to the Internet.

Won't get much from Uncle Ted (Stevens) as he is a neocon shrub-kisser, but Lisa Murkowski is just about ready for that over-the-edge push to the light.

On edit - I hope we get those million calls :kick: & Rec!

I've dealt with her on many issues, from Iraq to Global Warming to local stuff - and I always, always get a response. Not necessarily the response I want, of course, but a least I get one!

Now, one ringy-dingy,

52. The great actress Lily Tomlin -
"back in the day" she played a comic bit about a telephone operator that was hysterical. Ernestine, the Operator, got her start on Laugh-In - for a brief MP3 of the character: http://www.esnips.com/doc/9b90518d-df12-4934-bc0c-d15ce566e582/Lily-Tomlin---Ernestine

TRULY
