Man gets 25 years for impregnating 9-year-old
ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to having sex and impregnating a then 9-year-old girl.
William Edward Ronca, 26, was arrested last year after doctors discovered the girl was at least seven months pregnant.

Ronca pleaded guilty Tuesday and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He will have to serve more than 21 years before he is eligible for parole. The judge gave him five years less than the maximum because he admitted to the crime and apologized to the girl's family.

Ronca had been having sex with the girl for about a year, and told her not to tell anyone, according to arrest warrants.

The girl had the baby, which was put up for adoption. Her father said the pregnancy and Caesarean section means the victim can never enjoy her childhood again because every time she dresses she can see the stretch marks and surgical scars.

He'll never serve all 25 years...they will let him out after 5. That poor girl, just a baby herself. Noticed the guy had the triple name. Why do men with triple names seem to commit the most crimes.

35. there's a reason why they use the full name
The guy probably goes by William Ronca, more likely, Bill Ronca. How many Bill Roncas are there out there?

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22bill+ronca%22&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7SUNA

I'm showing 70 hits just with a google search, not even talking about a phone book. Here's the first return:

Bill Ronca has been with Nomaco K-Flex for six years and is currently a technical advisor for insulation products. He was previously technical services manager and manager of codes, standards and approvals for the construction products division of W. R. Grace & Co., Fire Protection Products. Contact him at bronca@nomaco.com.

Do you think he'd appreciate it if the first google results on his name now shows him as a registered sex offender? While it's likely there's another William Edward Ronca out there, at least that's one or two people rather than 40 or 50.

13. Bit of a sweeping generalization there...
Most of us have a middle name--it's just not known until we're in trouble. From early childhood on you know the shit's going down if mom uses all three names.

"William Jefferson Clinton! You get your butt in this house this instant, young man!"

That said, this dude is one sick piece of shit. Fortunately for the rest of humanity, he will probably be killed in jail. I hear real criminals are as disgusted as the rest of us by the human garbage that assaults kids.

60. Some people go by their middle name.
Unfortunately our society insists on "First name, middle initial, last name".
The bureaucrats think EVERYBODY goes by their first name.

I have never gone by my first name. My parents always called me by my middle name. There are lots of people out there who go by their middle name.

I have gotten used to answering to my first name as I have gotten older and had to deal with doctors and insurance companies that are confused.

72. You just don't
associate the two. I work in an elementary school and we were worried about one of our 5th fifth grade girls being pregnant. That was a harrowing time for all of us. Imagine sending a young girl to a Doc for this. Those are the days I hate to be a School Nurse.

Nine year olds having periods is still VERY rare...and I know, I'm the School Nurse. I would suspect a tumour before a pregnancy-and I am a medical professional. When girls start their periods-it is not uncommon to have a few and then skip. The body is not regular sometimes. And you don't think of kids having sex. You have to look at behaviours (they can include precocious OR shy)for that clue unless they tell you. How can you tell whether they haven't started yet from they are pregnant and not having a period.

Frankly, I am envisioning all kinds of ways to 'correct' this guys behaviour. The best one would be letting out with the general prison population. There is no excuse for that.

There's so much in this story I don't know where to start.

First question -- where the F*CK were the PARENTS? Did Mommy even bother to keep an eye on her menstruating daughter?

And was this guy chemically castrated?

Didn't know until she was 7 months pregnant? I can only assume this kid has a weight problem -- how the hell can you NOT tell she's pregnant otherwise?

18. Blame it on xenohormones that are causing weight gain in kids
The female body needs a certain amount of body fat to trigger the menstruation process. It's obvious from the balanced American diet that :sarcasm: kids are crossing this weight threshold earlier and earlier these days.

I was so gangly and skinny as a teenager, I never "matured" until I was 15. Weight definitely has alot to do with this...

51. Previously there were incidents of precocious puberty
but these days many kids are reaching sexual maturity quicker. It's well documented.

See this for a good explanation of possible causes of the rise of early menarche: http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/puberty.html

THE SILENT INVASION
Since early puberty is a well-established risk for breast cancer, the earlier a woman reaches puberty, the longer her breast tissues will be exposed to potentially harmful agents (chemicals, radiation and estrogen).8 Even though a girl may begin menstruating, it is unusual for her to be ovulating every month. Since ovulation is necessary for the production of progesterone, early puberty is often a condition that results in estrogen production without the protective effects of progesterone. This hormonal imbalance adds to a girl's body-burden of estrogen excess, putting her at increased risk of estrogen-dependent cancers and other hormonal problems.
It has been known for some time that the younger a woman is when she starts her periods, the higher her risk of developing breast cancer later in life. The younger a woman is, the longer her overall exposure to high levels of estrogens....

One explanation looks at a protein called leptin that encourages early breast development. Leptin is produced from fat cells and is necessary for the progression of puberty. So, the more fat cells, the more leptin is produced by the body. In addition, overweight girls have more insulin circulating in their blood. High levels of insulin stimulate the production of sex hormones such as estrogen, adding to an estrogen excess.

Is it just the fast foods and sedentary lifestyle that are piling up the leptin-producing fat? Perhaps not.
A 20-year study found that the greater the prenatal level of the hormone disruptor polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), the heavier the girls were at age fourteen and their puberty was statistically earlier.12

Could prenatal exposure to hormone disruptors play a role in obesity? A study based on this idea was conducted by Dr Walter Rogan, an epidemiologist at the National Institute of Environmental Heath Sciences. He chose 600 pregnant women and measured the levels of chemicals in their bodies; then, when their babies were born, the researchers measured the chemicals in the mothers' breast milk, and finally, the children were monitored as they grew into puberty. What was found was that boys exposed to DDE and girls exposed to PCBs were heavier than their unexposed peers were. The study also found that girls with high prenatal PCB exposure tended to hit the first stages of puberty a bit earlier.13
In fact, the most significant guilty party is looking more and more like endocrine disruptors. Circulating around the world are thousands of these endocrine-disrupting chemicals which are now found everywhere—in our food, water and the air we breathe.

34. The age of menstruation keeps dropping
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 12:18 PM by Warpy
and there are a lot of 9 year olds out there who are sexually maturing.

Her parents probably thought all that abstinence education weas doing the trick and that 9 year olds would never be interested in sex on any level.

Yes, she probably did have a weight problem, but it would have been dismissed as puppy fat before that final growth spurt. Plus, at 9 years old a kid thinks it'll go away if she just ignores it, and that's if she knows enough to know she's pregnant. It's also common for a kid to skip one or even several months menstruating in the beginning.

I doubt he's been chemically castrated or ever will be. After all, it's considered cruel to deprive a male of his sex life, even when it's with little kids.

41. Very true, a friends daughter...
...began menstruating at 7 and had to start wearing training bra's shortly thereafter. She's now 11 and is probably a B-cup, if I had to guess. Nobody every guesses her age correctly, and she's constantly having to fend off older boys.

I've had some interesting discussions with her parents about the problems it's caused. My own daughter is 13, flat as a board, and according my wife shows no signs of "maturing" yet. The two girls are very good friends and do many of the same things together, so it's been a running discussion for a while now about what would cause one girl to "bloom" so early while the other shows no sign of it. According to my friend and his wife, this apparently doesn't run in either of their families.

Personally, I think it's weight, and most of the anecdotal stories I hear seem to back that idea up. His daughter was fairly heavy when she was younger (though she's thinned as she grew older), while my daughter has always been a complete waif...tall and incredibly thin. Just a theory.

74. Last time I saw any stats...
the changes were no more than a month earlier on average. The changes were noticed after the invention of the light bulb. There is some thought that the light stimulates some of the endocrine glands. Possible because we know of SAD (seasonal affective disorder-how sunlight affect mood). Hormones fed to chickens were linked in one study in Puerto Rico but I haven't kept up with the research in years and this is off the top of my head.

63. Got mine when I was nine..
and I'm 42 now. I still remember the scary trip to the school nurses office that day and having to be taught how to use the pad (and it's belt that was used in those days!) I never would admit it to other girls at school, though. We got one of those "boys to this room, girls to that room" lectures a few months later and when the teacher asked who had already "started", I couldn't bring myself to raise my hand cuz none of the other girls in the class raised theirs.
Needless to say, I found myself explaining periods to my own girls when they were that young in case they inherited my early starting. Didn't want them to get the surpise I got back then....

But of course the right would still force this LITTLE GIRL to get her body all wrecked to have the baby.

This sick fuck is only 26. There's no way he wasn't a perverted kid and teen-ager. It appalls me that we're failing to decently address childhood (including teen-ager) development in this nation. I just have to believe we could nip a lot of this shit in the bud if we had comprehensive mental health care in our public education systems as a part of national health care. IMHO, there's nobody who wouldn't benefit from such a program.

37. I wouldn't always blame the parents
Sometimes the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. A month or so back we had a report of a little black boy raped and murdered. Turns out the guy who did it brought the kid home and both he and his dad assaulted him while mom watched and masturbated. Just looking at the mugs of these people made me want to take a shower, we're talking the product of generations of inbreeding.

Other times you end up with twisted people coming from good homes and there's just not much to explain it except saying something went wrong with the brain. Also, if it's straight sociopathy, a lot of them can hide it very well.

While I do think the parent's should carry a large load of the blame, we can also blame the media and advertising. EVERYTHING relating to "growing up" in this nation is sexualized. When I see a 6th grader marinated in Axe cologne, checking out a 5th grade girl who is wearing clothes that exposes all sorts of body bits -- it's insane.

This isn't to give the racist a free pass. But these kids are being programmed into this hypersexual mode at a very early age. And when people question it they get beat over the head with the Free Speech Club.

I try to focus on the most seminal approach to dealing with such issues - and merely getting my self-righteous rock off with fantasies of revenge or spreading the 'blame' across such a huge spectrum that no reasonably achievable goal can serve a policy objective seems a bit too irrational to me.

It's a chicken-and-egg thing to some extent. The 'normal' mental/emotional health in our culture isn't anything to write home about. Neuroses and codependent thinking are a plague in our nation. I tend to look at the TWO greatest social issues: health care and education. If we can't construct a 'ideal' paradigm of what we'd aspire to for a spectrum of social programs that would benefit ALL of us, we're spinning our wheels. That we wallow in a hyper-sexualized (the 'egg' of objectification and commoditization of human beings) is, I believe, symptomatic of our neuroses (the chicken).

Thus, I form a vision of national health care and national service that includes mental health care, instruction, counseling, and education as an integral part of the public education system - "Your Mind & How To Use It." I have voiced my support for a national service obligation - and the Public Health Service would, imho, be a key component. I also voice support for non=stigmatizing mental health care - which makes treatment and counseling for ALL both ameliorative and productive. It seems clear that Critical Thinking and Logic are major weaknesses in public education - and I regard both as part of mental health. Service to our community seems obligatory as well - if only because it'd nurture empathy and compassion. (A mind without a heart is a recipe for sociopathy.)

So ... no ... I'm not kidding. I always try to focus on some positive goal, progress toward which might be the very measure of what 'progress' means.

56. Of course, it's always easier to veer off into the great morass of
*pseudo-intellectual reasoning* in order to totally disregard the real reasons causing the problems from the initial post. Makes it that much easier to walk away from a problem caused by everyone.

I've always found that people who ride high horses generally suffer from the lack of air at the heights they place themselves at.

62. (sardonic snark deleted) I regard DU as primarily a place to discuss public policy.
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 04:31 PM by TahitiNut
I see that at the core of political discussion. I don't believe good public policy is adopted in revenge or by mobs.

As a liberal, I'm steadfastly in favor of due process and positive steps toward prevention rather than retribution. Rather than express preferences for people of my race, people of my gender, people of my faith - I regard all people as kin andpart of my extended family and due my equal regard. I have adopted these perspectives from long experience and a life in which I've put myself at risk for the sake of such values. I adopt my stances on public education, public health care, and public service recognizing that none exist in isolation from one another. When large populations are place under ths stresses of the gaps in equity and the threats of deprivation, inhumane behavior is to be expected. The more alternatives and support for people aspiring to the higher motivators on Maslov's hierarchy, the better we can all be.

If such stories cannot serve discussion of reasonable and equitable public policy, then they don't belong in this forum and should be treated as inflammatory, IMHO. (I notice that many DUers already see them in this way and avoid such threads - where fools Limbaugh in and angels fear to tread.)

Its not bad enough that a 26 yo "man" (I use that term lightly) impregnates a 9 yo child, but that it had been going on for a year or so. A year?!?

Also, her father laments that she has had her childhood stolen from her. Well, where were you Dad when all this was going on?

Its a SICK, SICK world were living in folks.

38. I hesitate to blame any of this on the parents,
after all, the 26 year old rightly deserves the blame for what he did. But I wonder where this girl's parents were? Didn't they monitor her activities, where she was, and what she was doing? I don't know a single kid under 13 year old who has an ounce of real privacy any more.

And while it was going on, weren't they talking to their daughter?

42. How a 9 year old could have a baby
Generally menstruation is a function of weight rather than age, usually around 100 lb iirc. To not have known she was pregnant for 7 months and that she was menstruating is an indicator that she was/is likely very overweight. I'm not making any statement about the situation, the girl, etc, just offering a reply to those who were wondering 'how'.

52. Not necessarily...
At Fort Campbell I had a real good 19-year-old female soldier, a real little kid--like three inches taller than the minimum you had to be to get in the army and maybe 100 pounds soaking wet with a brick in her pocket--who was feeling poorly for about three weeks. "Oh, I'll get over it. I'll get over it."

Finally we "suggested" (okay, we got Top to fill out a sick slip, stuffed her in a jeep and drove her there with orders not to come out until they were done with her) that she go to the medical clinic and find out what she was trying to get over. Seven months pregnant.

In the Army we wear baggy clothes, and they managed to conceal the distended belly. Aren't baggy clothes for teens popular?

a NINE year old is already having menstrual cycles...... I know it has happened in the past but that seems just a tad bid too young to start having periods. my point, all the hormones being injected into everything we eat?

46. Not hormones, no.
People think that hormones cause puberty, and there's hormones being injected into farm animals, and make the false assumption that early puberty's being caused by hormone injections.

The meat from cows, and other animals raised for meat, that are injected with hormones is not any different than the regular stuff.

There's also a myth that the average age of menarche has been decreasing. It has not changed in the last sixty years.

The range can be from 8 to 16. When I was a kid, many moons ago, there were 9 year olds who had gotten their period.

57. Five years less than the maximum...
I'm going to guess the judge probably wanted to give him more.

A federal judge recently explained to me why they do the less-than-maximum. It is not because they are being lenient on that particular individual; it is simply incentive for the next one.

In this case the criminal plead guilty, thereby relieving the courts of the burden of a trial. In other cases the murderer might tell the location of the rest of the bodies or the embezzler cooperates by producing all the relevant documents. It's basically to tell the criminal, if you help us, we'll cut you a break.

If they always handed out the maximum sentence, eventually it would become why would I want to cooperate with the prosecution? I'm going to get the maximum anyway.

61. This Story Exemplifies The Real Purpose of the Anti-Abortion Movement
The anti-abortion movement's real purpose is to guarantee the right of males to impregnant any woman or child that they please. Yes, he goes to jail, but that child had to bear another child which carries his seed.

This is the real crux of why they hate abortion because it would allow a child, like the one in the story, to abort his seed, thereby denying men their "dominion" over all women.

Cheap labor. Breed slaves. Breed more field hands and cooks. The plantation elite can afford to get an abortion almost on a whim. There's always an expensive doctor - or a trip to Europe. Money buys entitlements and rights are (supposedly) free - so let's convert 'rights' into entitlements for the wealthy. One dollar one vote.
