"Where to hold 9/11 trial? Not in NYC, some say" - ap
Edited on Wed Jan-27-10 05:21 PM by demoleft
"NEW YORK – Where should the men accused of planning the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks be tried? Not here, say New York City business and community leaders whose list of alternatives includes military bases, federal prisons and a 172-acre island in New York Harbor.

Even Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who previously supported the Obama administration's decision to hold the trial in New York, appeared to change his mind. "If they were to move it elsewheres, I'd be very happy with that," Bloomberg said Wednesday.
...
Bloomberg has estimated the cost at $216 million for the first year after the suspects arrive in Manhattan from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After that, the mayor said it would cost $200 million annually for as long as the men are detained in the city — mainly overtime for extra New York Police Department patrols.

Bloomberg and other New York elected officials have called on the federal government to foot the bill."

1. let's put it off for 70 years
like the British--Why on earth would any relatives of the victioms like to see justice served where the crime occurred? That's just crazy talk (and normal protocol, which hasn't been followed in any of the DOJ approaches to this crime.)

3. That's like saying the Mayor of NY was murdered by a French citizen in NY.
And having the trial held in France under French law.

I bet the family and NY residents would be up in arms against the trial being moved outside of NY.

Or having the trial held in the US using French law.

If they want to send a message to terrorists they need to hold the trial in NY.

5. Absolutely not in New York.
Or most of the northeast for that matter. If we're going to have trials in civilian court under our laws, they need to follow all of them. That includes the right to move a trial out of an area where neutrality is impossible. Every New Yorker who has looked at the skyline in the last decade was affected by what happened, and therefore every New Yorker who has looked at the skyline for the last decade (including potential judges and jurors) should be disqualified from serving on the trial.

The trial should be held as far as possible from New York. Probably somewhere in the western states. I realize that's an imposition on the families of the victims, but trials are about the rights of the accused, and not the needs of the victims.
