Help me to understand Verizon's announcement of 13,000 job cuts
Edited on Wed Jan-27-10 12:04 PM by DemoTex
After posting a fourth-quarter loss, Verizon Communications, Inc. said Tuesday it plans to cut about 13,000 jobs this year.

Verizon recorded a net loss of $653 million, or 23 cents per share, compared with a profit of $1.24 billion, or 43 cents a share, a year earlier.

The loss came after the company took a charge of $3 billion for cutting a total of 17,000 jobs last year in both its landline and wireless divisions. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had forecast earnings of 54 cents per share.

Verizon writes down $3-billion for firing 17,000 people last year, then turns around and fires another 13,000 because of paper losses generated by the $3-billion in funny-money? Help me understand this. Seems rather circular to this lad from the woods.

2. There are only two fundamental truths that explain everything
What's good for Wall Street isn't good for Main Street
What's good for Wall Street is more important that what's good for Main Street.

If you are looking for something more subtle, more profound, or more comforting than reality, you'll have to seek your explanations in mythology.

You have two choices of mythology:
1) Traditional Western, Eastern and Pagan religions
2) The American Dream (Western Religion, with Christ an entrepreneur).
