SC ruling sucks, but everyone has the wrong approach to preventing political bribery.
Look, there are 535 members of congress. There are ~300 million citizens. Is it easier to watch 535 people, or 300 million people? The poor politicians claim that they need laws restricting the lobbying activities and speech of the 300 million people.

The only reason people by political favors is because the 535 people sell political favors.

How about this: Every single room in the capitol and every congressman's home, except for their bedrooms and children's bedrooms, should have full video and audio streamed to the internet.

It shall be illegal for politicians to speak to anyone except their spouses about politics when not on camera.

A hassle? sure. Pay them all 15 million dollars per year.. that will overcome the invasion of privacy.

Personally, I am sick to death of 535 people telling us that they just can't help selling political favors, and that the solution is for more restrictions on our behavior.

5. I don't think that "bribery" is really the point.
The point is 24/7 "swift-boating". You're not going to be able to turn on your TV or radio without hearing ads approved by Rush Limbaugh.

And please don't tell me the American people are too smart to fall for that.

6. Nanny-cams for Congress and ALL Registered Lobbyists!
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 01:56 PM by johnfunk
Plus an "N-SPAN.gov" nanny-can site allowing YOU, the taxpayer, to monitor the congresscritters and lobbyists!

Now THAT is a Nanny State I can believe in! You just know that the Republicans on OUR payroll -- and the oligarch "shadow government" shills -- would start howling about privacy rights and a National Surveillance State.
