The late Dr. George Tiller, on why he performed abortions:

Watch: http://www.openleft.com/diary/17071/trust-women

It's the anniversary of Roe V. Wade today and Scott Roeder's trial for the murder of Dr. Tiller has begun. I'd write more, but this week in politics has left my hamster wheel a little damaged, so I'm going to go have a Friday night and leave you with what they said ...

- A Blog for Choice Day roundup on money, class, humanity and why it's important to trust women.

- Take comfort. The Washington State prison system only shackles 30 percent of pregnant inmates during childbirth.

- "I'm pro-choice because I love life."

- Someday, women will be real people, like some believe that Citigroup, ExxonMobil and fertilized eggs are.

- Apparently stalking abortion patients can get a lawyer disbarred. Who knew?

- The Nelson amendment in the Senate is as bad as the Stupak amendment in the House, it will just act more slowly to stop all insurance coverage of abortion. Screwing your friends is how people (and parties) get abandoned, you know.

1. As always, I signed my name to a full-page newspaper ad run by the local Pro-Choice Coalition
So that's out there today.

Challenges: The local ABC affiliate ran a prepackaged piece on the new Planned Parenthood facility in Texas. The interviewer let the anti-choice person there go on lying for 5 minutes straight, then asked the PP representative to respond. She said, "They should be ashamed of th" -- and that was the end of the tape, apparently. Without further comment the local newsreader went to the next segment.

It can seem like small potatoes, but what your local newscasters say has an affect. I thought they stopped being so biased when The Blonde retired several years ago, but apparently they've found their inner anti-choicer again.

So I did what I used to do on a regular basis when Blondie was still there: I phoned the viewer comment line and gave them what-for. Left my name and number and invited them to call me -- or even call the local PP for an interview.

Nada. No response. I wonder if ABC corporate news approves, or if this is just local?

There is a huge amount of work still to be done to protect women and see that they get the full spectrum of medical care to which they are entitled as human beings.
