When a relatively small number of people determined who our candidate was going to be?

1. No, I would say to the days of McKinley when business controlled everything.

2. Farther back than that, I think. Vanderbilt, Morgan, Carnegie.

7. Bingo!
It's the early 20th century all over again. Replete with an extreme under-class who is basically scratching by for a living and being exploited at every turn, while the fat cats wear their suits and smoke their cigars.

9. Why didn't this happen in the 40's, 50's and 60's?

10. I'm not an economic historian, but the cynic in me would say ...
... that after the crash in '29 and resulting Depression, they needed to 'throw us all a bone' so we would have money to buy their products and start rebuilding their wealth. Economies are cyclical and once you lose it all, there's no place to go but up ... but if you're a robber baron with no actual skill other than wheeling and dealing, you use the little guy - by making him think you're doing him a favor (jobs, homes, cars, loans) - as a means to increase your own wealth (profits, interest rates etc). So here we are - the billionaires are bloated and the rest of us are ready to crash again.

Pre WWII Italy and Mussolini styled fascism.

5. That's crazy.
In a way it's like the 20s when banks were unregulated and people who tried to make an honest living just got the shaft.

6. I'm too young to remember when...
conventions were more then a glorified tv ad. Back then, the money people made back room deals about who they'd support in return for gravy.
