(WASHINGTON) — For the first time anthropologists have discovered a country outside our societal system that is potentially habitable, with America-like traits, a find researchers described Tuesday as a big step in the search for "intelligent life on the planet."
The nation is just the right size, might have democracy, and in geographical terms is relatively nearby and directly north.
There's still a lot that is unknown about the new country, which could be deemed hospitable to life once more is known about it. And it's worth noting that anthropologists' requirements for habitability count Great Britain in that category: a society relatively similar to America's with laws that would permit democracy.
"It's a significant step on the way to finding possible democracy and freedom on the continent," said University of Kansas Anthropologist Al Minnete, one of 11 American historians on the team that found the country. "It's a nice discovery. We still have a lot of questions."
The results of the discovery have not been published but have been submitted to the journal Anthropology and Geopolitical History.
The new country has about five times more democracy than America. Its discoverers aren't certain if it supports intelligent life or if its a frozen wasteland with ice on the surface.
The new country seems just right for supporting democratically oppressed Americans— or at least that's what experts think.
"This could be very important," said Anthropologist Percy Helton, who was not part of the discovery team. "It doesn't mean there is intelligent life, but it means it's an American-like country in terms of potential habitability."
Eventually right wing imperialists and colonialists will rack up discoveries of dozens, maybe even hundreds of nations considered habitable, the expert said. But this one — simply called "C" by its discoverers when they talk among themselves — will go down in history as No. 1.
Besides having the right temperature, the new nation is probably full of usable resources, hypothesizes William Kristol, the discovery team's lead author and member of the Project for a New American Century. But that is based on theory about how nations form, not on any evidence, he said.
"Because of its temperature and relative proximity, this country will most probably be a very important target of the future peace missions dedicated to the search for fuel and natural resources. On the treasure map of the planet, one would be tempted to mark this country with an X."

Wow! This is really blowing my mind! To think that we might eventually discover a whole nation where freedom and democracy and common sense can grow and prosper! I always thought this was the stuff of sci-fi movies and loonies.
Wouldn't it be just so cool to actually go to this place and have our kids grow up there, unencumbered by mass insanity and hysteria? Oh well, it makes you think anyway.
