House to take up impeachment resolution
April 24, 2007

By Louis Porter
Vermont Press Bureau

MONTPELIER - The state House will likely take up the resolution calling for the impeachment of President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney tomorrow. But even supporters of the idea said it was unlikely to have an easy time getting enough votes to be approved. The measure passed the Senate Friday on a 16-9 vote, with almost no warning that it was going to be taken up at all. Leaders of both the House and Senate had said they were not inclined to debate the matter. In part that was because of the worry that debating the matter would take too much time.

But today Speaker of the House Gaye Symington said the impeachment resolution - for which a large Statehouse rally is planned for tomorrow - was already distracting the Legislature from other issues.

By early afternoon 25 representatives had agreed to support the resolution, which calls on the U.S. Congress to move ahead with impeachment.

But Zuckerman acknowledged that with opposition by many Democrats, including Symington, it would be tough to get the majority of the House to support the measure.
