Why is COAKLEY's baseball gaffe an "issue" & NOT the nude centerfold?

All the yak shows have been featuring her gaffe, but, except for the internets, I never would have known about the Rethug's nude centerfold past.

Where to start. Why are baseball and '08's regional snacks (lettuce, cheesesteaks, beer) touted by fool yakkers, and I suppose some fool voters, to be worthy "reasons" to vote against somebody?!1 If it isn't obvious, I have no idea what "arugula" is, is that the lettuce OBAMA was said to be an elitist about---that it might be a lettuce is what has filtered down to me? And wasn't the cheesesteak or something one of the raps against KERRY? And NO idea about baseball beyond that I was bored and burned in the sun for three hours the one time I went to a game----oh, somebody named MARIS and t'other-one were playing.

Why doesn't any oh-so-smart yakker mention that a working district attorney or attorney general or whatever, just MIGHT be too busy studying stuff and reading long, excrutiatingly detailed, and BORING legal stuff to have time or interest in BASEBALL?!1 Could it be something called "public service"?!1

The Jeff GANNON character has been mentioned in some of the discussions here, by association of male nudity. Yes, WHY didn't GANNON become something for our crack media to get to the bottom (no intention) of?!1 What was important about him was not HIM, but how Shrub's White House was manipulating the media AND who sponsored him into the White House and for what reasons. Otoh, why was it supposedly something to be feared on the grounds of potential blackmail that CLINTON had sexual escapades?

What about when Ahhhnuld was taking over the PAID FOR "recall" and Tweety said he heard that the Dems were going to go negative about his past----you know, the alleged drugs and alleged sexual sugar daddies of his youth and the alleged sexual harassment and who knows what else----and Tweety got FEROCIOUS and threatened, "They'd BETTER NOT!1" It was the most ferocious I had seen him except for the more prolonged time when he performed the public execution of DONAHUE on DONAHUE's own show. Tweety's very selective Democratic-ness seems to show itself only for some KENNEDYs and only occasionally.

Who decided that baseball and snacks are supposed to be criteria for political office?!1

When you say, "It's not," I repeat that the baseball thing has been featured endlessly by the yakkers, so it wasn't done by MY "feeding the beast"---as though the beasts await MY words for their feeding. I hope you're correct that MA voters don't consider it an issue.

4. No one likes phony folksy

I don't think it's a lack of baseball knowledge. It's a politician trying to be folksy by using a line someone else gave her and being exposed as such. It rubs people the wrong way. Sorry, it just does.

I long for a candidate that would "speak sense to the American people," (STEVENSON), who would say, "I'm a policy wonk and a geek and a nerd. I'm here because I know my political stuff and am tough about THAT. I *don't* know about baseball or whatever."


It was always irritating when George WILL would talk about baseball, as if we were supposed to drop our political hostility to him and ENJOY his other side. Worse when LIMBOsevic talks football or tells us how much he loves Xmas, the way HITLER loved dogs.

Yeah, the phony folksiness is the valid point. Still, there is still out there the wider perception that some kind of folksiness, whatever form it takes, is supposed to be a determinant.


It's turning things on its end: When there is a truly great human (FDR), we want to know all about the human---the trivia, the idiosyncracies, the likes and dislikes. But those are the dog's tail, and I'm saying the yakkers put the tail first.
