Is there a better way to spend our public dollars? Or do we still just want to watch our pets die, and barf or die ourselves because we ate spinach, peanut butter, fast food hamburgers, salad bar melons, scallions, ground beef, or one of the plethora of other food menaces that we can't begin to understand or control?

Good job Republicans! Industry can ALWAYS regulate themselves and government oversight is ALWAYS bad.

1. I think they shifted them all to public schools.
Cuz I haven't seen any decrease in oversight here.

inspectors and monitoring packing plant compliance with laws. But we wouldn't want MORE of them, right, because as we know ALL VETERINARIANS ARE JUST EVIL CORPORATE SHILLS.

I know - we can put the PETA people in charge and fire the vets.

4. kestrel I always appreciate your insight
but I do think it is hard when an industry or some of those within the industry ally themselves with specific corporate entities and then they themselves make money from that association.

A doctor owns an interest in an MRI clinic.
A vet sells Science diet and makes a profit
A dermatologist sells a particular cosmetic line or develops their own

The doctor might be ethical and only order MRI's when neccessary and his company might be the best and the most reasonably priced
The vet might believe that Science diet is the best and the little bit of money made isn't really enough to alter that opinion
Same with Dermaguy - sincerely thinks product is the best or his own line is revolutionary

We just don't know and every situation is different. But it tends to make the public skeptical. Every product and every professional has to earn the public trust - over and over and over and over.

6. ".......A vet sells Science diet and makes a profit......."
OF COURSE I sell things for a profit!!!!!!! Among them is Science Diet, but it may come as a shock to you that it's NOT the only food I recommend. I have a fairly short list of foods I think are good, and Science Diet is on that list. I use their Prescription Diet line because it was the original and old habits die hard. I cannot possibly carry any other foods due to severe space limitations, so I carry ONE of my favorites. The only benefit to this is the TINY profit margin, plus buying for my hospital use and home use at wholesale.

Does this make me a dishonest shill????

Guess what - you CANNOT BUY ME. I have an ethical system that a few thousand dollars over the course of a year has NO impact on. I ain't some cheap whore, and neither are most of my colleagues. I am a MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.

I also prescribe and sell many medications. I sell a few grooming implements and other OTC items that relate directly to my medical practice, like FON and Nurturall milk replacer and flea controls. What would you have me do? Recommend them and then tell my clients to go buy them at the next vet down the street?????

I run a BUSINESS. I MUST cover the rent, utilities, payroll, supplies, taxes, licenses, fees, lab bills, etc, etc, etc to an extent that would horrify most people. Then, at then end of the month, IF there is any extra I get to live on that. I HAVE to love what I do because the rewards are surely not monetary. Do you think for ONE MINUTE that I would jeopardize my license to practice by engaging in ANY unethical behavior?????

Hill's doesn't pay me one red cent. Neither does Nutro/Max Cat, or Fancy Feast, or Costco, or any of the other companies whose products I recommend. And the MANY companies who make inferior products try and fail with some regularity to get me to sell their product and they are out of luck.

I can't be bought for ANY price.

7. "every professional has to earn the public trust - over and over and over and over"
Sorry. If I have to earn somebody's trust every f---ing time they wolk through the door, IT'S NOT WORTH IT. They need to find another vet.

People who treat their vets like criminals deserve only criminals for vets.

5. We could probably use a few to check shipping containers too
but then the govt hasn't cared much about that little issue either.
