All right you do gooding liberals time to put your money where your mouth is! Several places are even hosting events on the preceding Saturday incase you dont get it off.

I am going to help restore a park in Austin with the Americorps Alums

Perhaps next year DUers can organize teams in different cities

1. Thanks for the link
Last year, we did a service day project for the Special Olympics, which we'd found through the Obama volunteering website (name now forgotten). This seems to have a lot more opportunities.

From browsing through, I think I am leaning towards signing up for a regular stint as a "reading buddy" to elementary school kids in the Chicago Public Schools. I love working one-on-one with kids ... it was something I did for many years, and would like an opportunity to resume either reading with younger kids or tutoring high-school agers.

3. Helping with donations to a local homeless shelter...last year we
had a pj/book drive for foster kids. We are a group of people who came together working for/with Obama's campaign and decided to change our mission to a service organization (just like Obama asked) we have about 24 members who regularly do local community service projects. We are celebrating our 1 year anniversary on MLK day also.

6. My MLK holiday was canceled.
I work at a food bank and some of us have to work that day so volunteers can volunteer. Oddly, I don't seem to mind the cancellation of my 3-day weekend.

9. I'm going to rest.
I "serve" every day of the week by working for free beyond my contractual hours. Generally about 7-10 hours a week.
