Woolsey To Support “Blue Dog” Harman as Progressive Momentum Builds for Winograd

To the surprise of many, Lynne Woolsey, the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has decided to throw her support behind notorious Blue Dog Jane Harman and her 2010 bid for re-election. Woolsey will be holding a fundraising event for her that California progressives were invited to join.

There is a growing sense of outrage against entrenched Congressional Democrats. One of the wealthiest members of Congress, Jane "the female Joe Lieberman" Harman, is a primary example of this. She will defend her seat this year against Marcy Winograd.

Winograd is the type of Democrat to be proud of. She has long been involved with grassroots progressive activism and supports complete withdrawal from overseas military engagements. She is a strong proponent of single-payer health care and supports citizens’ constitutional protections.

To describe Harman as the opposite of this is an understatement. Despite representing one of the most liberal districts in the country, she frequently obstructs progressive legislation and proudly places corporate interests above those of the common citizen. Her odious voting record is reflective of this:

• Harman voted to protect the pharmaceutical industry at the expense of patients – making it more difficult for breast cancer patients to buy affordable generics.

• Harman voted against the bill that would have permitted judges to reduce mortgage payments in bankruptcy courts.

• Harman voted to protect and bail out the big banks while supporting legislation that made it more difficult for consumers to declare bankruptcy.

• Harman applauded Bush’s illegal wiretapping program; three years later she claimed she never supported it.

• Harman lobbied for the Iraq invasion and occupation while personally investing in military contractors.

• Harman, whose committee assignments include Homeland Security and a subcommittee on Border, Maritime and Global Counterterrorism invested $6,260,000 in military contracts.

...

California’s 36th district deserves a representative that puts people, not Wall Street or war profiteers, first.

1. In my limited interactions with Representative Woolsey, I never got the impression...
...that she was one of our brightest stars.

I have no idea what she's thinking on this one.
