Avatar made me blue
Here's why I hated it, despite its message being one I agree with:

1. I call it Dancing with Ferngully. I did like it though.

5. "Dances with Pocahontas in Ferngully"
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 10:54 PM by Lorien

But I still enjoyed it, even though I too wondered about their feet, and the fact that everything else crawling and flying had extra legs, nostrils and eyes. They needed an evolutionary biologist on board.

6. Oh, that's good!
On another board, someone complained about the six-legged beasts and the four-limbed Na'avi.

I forgot the extra eyes and nostrils. I don't see the point of extra eyes. On Earth, evolution seems to have settled either on two eyes or compound eyes. Moviemakers throw in details that look nifty without thinking about the context.

8. +1
I have to agree.

I saw the parallels to Fern Gully and Dances With Wolves right away. But I never saw Pocahontas, so I did not see that parallel before.

12. And he had 15 years to think about it. It would have made more sense for the Na' vi
to have had eight limbs than it would have for the "dire horse" to have been equipped with the additional forelegs. After all, an extra set of arms-and more than three fingers per hand- would have been helpful for tree and rock climbing. I could buy the tails because they were arboreal, but not the three fingers and short toes.

Also, why did Cameron settle on plebeian names like "Pandora", "Hallelujah mountains", "Banshee" and "Dire Horse"? Lucas always was able to come up with unique alien names for his places and creatures that more fully fleshed out his universe. It's odd that Cameron is known as a driven perfectionist when he overlooks the obvious so frequently.

4. That was probably the most convincing moment in the movie.

9. Here's a funny story for you
My parents, when they were dating, went to see a movie. While waiting to enter the theater they saw the crowd from the previous show leaving. A couple was discussing the movie on the way out and complaining how upset they were to see the hero die in the middle of the movie. My parents were upset that these jerks had spoiled the movie for them. The waited through the entire movie for the hero to die.

He never did.

17. Love it! And here's one for you:
When SE7EN came out, I was the first among my coworkers to see it. Afterwards I stopped by the sub shop where I worked and gave a brief review, summing it up by saying "I never would have guessed that Morgan Freeman was the killer." One of my coworkers was named Rob.

About six months later, when it came out on video, we were discussing it at the shop again, and Rob said he didn't have any interest. "I was going to see it," he said, "but somebody told me that Morgan Freeman was the killer and kind of ruined it for me."

10. The movie was eye candy. Eye candy doesn't need a plot.
Eye candy doesn't require consistency. Taking the eye candy apart and analyzing its meaning and implications really misses the point.

Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 11:27 PM by Xipe Totec
Are the Na'vi Spring, Summer, Autumn, of Winter?

And what blush do you use on blue cheeks?

Blue is just not my favorite skin tone.

18. The Colonel tells Jake at the beginning of the flick that Pandora is a low gravity planet..
And yet everything moves just like it was a normal 1-G field.. Even 3/4 G would be noticeable and 2/3 would be blatantly so..

And the sound of the helicopters is wrong too, the "whop whop" sound helis make is mostly the blade tips, the Pandora helis all have ducted fans that wouldn't make that noise..

But them I'm an ubergeek when it comes to this kind of stuff. ;)
