Is Domestic Violence ever acceptable? Swing it again, Elin!
http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2009/12/15/in-sweden-domestic-violence-is-girl-power/
<snip>
Sweden, a nation that has managed to avoid war for over 200 years, has nevertheless been quick to condone overseas agression in one recent conflict: Stockholm-born Elin Nordegren’s reportedly golf-club assisted assault on her philandering husband, Tiger Woods. Today on the Daily Beast, Katarina Andersson noted how some prominent Swedish media types have reacted to the Nordegren-Woods affair. Namely, “Swing it again, Elin!”:

Swing it again, Elin!” wrote Jan Helin, editor in chief of Aftonbladet, the country’s biggest newspaper, on his personal blog. One of the paper’s top reporters, Ann Söderlund, proclaimed, “Thank God for girls like Elin. Next time, I hope she uses a bigger club.”

Britta Svensson, a well-known columnist at the tabloid Expressen and a former U.S.-based correspondent, commented, “Our Swedish hearts are overwhelmed with pride, because our very own Elin didn’t take any s—. Just like a tough Swedish girl shouldn’t. Elin is our heroine.”

The American media, too, has been quick to excuse Nordegren’s alleged assault on Woods, which left him lying bewildered in the middle of the road, next to a busted car, with scratches on his face and possibly a broken tooth. Stateside, Tiger’s cheating has been deemed far more scandalous that Nordegren’s physical assault—commenters have labored to paint Nordegren as the victim to Woods’ web of affairs, but have hesitated to recognize Woods as a victim of domestic violence. Still, I’ve yet to hear from anyone actually endorsing Nordegren’s outburst as an act of girl-power.

2. It is the silent sexism
It is alright for a women to viciously beat a man with a golf club. The police won't even question you about it.

How many of those people would support beating women who cheat? It is the silent sexism.

18. Regardless of whether or not she did it
The silent sexism is the public support for women abusing men who cheat.

Can you imagine the outrage at the mere suggestion that a man hit a women with a golf club?

4. You know what? I HAVE to say something here.
I have to say, right up front, that Tiger is a DICK for what he did to his wife. A real asshole.

That being said, I want to see SOME sort of outrage for what this woman did to this man. However, if I were to hold my breath waiting for said reaction, I have a feeling I'd pass out very quickly, indeed. The condemnation of domestic violence, in this case, at least, will probably be long in coming, if ever. The reason - it was perpetrated by a WOMAN ON A MAN.

Now, right here, right now, let me VERY FIRMLY reiterate - what Tiger Woods did to his wife was reprehensible! He's a lying sack of shit who wanted his fifty cakes, and to be able to eat all of them, too! His wife would be justified calling him EVERY name in the book and making up some new ones, to boot. And yes, LEAVE his sorry ass! Just go - and take the kids. Tiger gets what he deserves.

I just don't think what he deserves is the possibility of losing his life, or at the least, being maimed so badly as to jeopardize his future and continuing career - unless one is willing to turn all of this around, where it was Elin doing the cheating, and imagine Tiger teeing off on HER, and being OK with whatever outcome.

I somehow believe the reverse of this situation would have brought calls for the man to be buried UNDER the eighteenth hole of the shoddiest backwater golf course that could be found.

Domestic violence is WRONG. Men beating their wives - WRONG. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

Let's just be sure we see it as wrong when the tables, which I READILY admit rarely do, get turned.

7. Agree. Elin could have killed him with that club. This should not be dismissed.
"Some say" Tiger didn't talk to police because he was trying to protect Elin from Florida's strict domestic violence laws - which would have landed her in jail for at least the night.

("Some others say" Tiger didn't talk to police because he rushed to Arizona for emergency plastic surgery to repair his damaged teeth, mouth and face.)

5. She hit the SUV with the club, not him.
Isn't that what happened? This article makes it sound like she hit him and "left him lying bewildered in the middle of the road, next to a busted car, with scratches on his face and possibly a broken tooth."

Does anyone know what really happened?

6. Cops said he had a "fat lip" 3 days after the incident.
needless to say a lot of info has been suppressed. the local attorney he hired is known as "Orlando's Johnny Cochrane" so his ass, while publicly humiliated, has been covered.

28. google, but here is one...
Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol have confirmed they met with golfer Tiger Woods on December 1st to deliver a traffic citation and that there were no visible facial injuries.
The FHP says they first met with Tiger Woods face to face December 1st, just a few days after his accident.

*
But more importantly, Montes says her officer saw only a fat lip on Tiger's face, no other injuries and no reason to believe he was the victim of domestic violence.

Montes says Woods' injuries are consistent with not wearing a seat belt and during the accident hitting the steering wheel.

This would appear to refute a widely circulated on-line account of a violent clash between woods and his wife Elin, first published by an Atlanta sports writer.

The guy behaved like a monumental cad- and sooner or later was bound to be found out... and probably just like this, with his wife having a go of one sort or another.

Two takes I liked on the whole deal was Frank Rich's metaphor for the decade:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/20/opinion/20rich.html

and Mark Morford's more to the point deal about crashing- then rising from the ashes:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2009/12/11/notes121109.DTL

(which I bet is spot on about how it's all going to play out over time)

19. What has he done that wasn't done by Vitter, Sanford, Ensign
or indeed Brit Hume. Infidelity is infidelity - the number of women is irrelevant.

20. Agreed, and this attitude does nothing to help female victims in the least.

It just perpetuates the notion that DV is okay if the recipient "deserved" it. It's the same mindset that condones and roots for prison rape.
