A humble question: Why don't the terrorists hate the Chinese?
Edited on Sun Jan-03-10 05:10 PM by bfarq
Don't get me wrong. I'm not wishing terrorism on the Chinese or anybody else. However, it is interesting to note that China is now becoming one of the most dominant economies in the world. And the standard of living in China is increasing rapidly. They have trade relations with just about everybody and are gaining economic ground on almost everybody.

I find it curious that you never hear of the Islamic fundamentalists wanting to take a go at China. Why is that?

It seems to me we need to understand the difference well because evidently it is possible to have a powerful, growing, even dominant economy without warring with Islamic fundamentalists.

I don't think Islamic fundamentalists have a problem with economic development. That was one of the weird memes that floating around after 9-11. It's silly.

4. Because the only countries the Chinese have invaded are the
Himalayan kingdoms of which Tibet is one of them. Since they are Buddhists, they don't believe in violence, however, there do seem to be some nationalistic movements beginning that may not be so peaceful. Stay tuned.

We, OTOH, have decided to invade and impoverish countries whose religions are based on warrior cultures.

6. Incidents in China
Incidents in China
Incidents in Xinjiang

On February 5, 1992, among the four bombs set in public buildings in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China, the two on the buses of line 2 and line 30 exploded. The incidents led to at least the death of 3, and injury of 23.

Urumqi bus bombs: On 25 February 1997 three bombs exploded in Urumqi. The bombs were set on the three buses (line 10, line 44, and line 2), and made the death of 9, (including the death of 3 children at least), and injury of 74.

Another bomb in the south railway station (the main station in Urumqi) didn't explode.

Steel balls, screws, and nails were found in the bombs.

China says at least 156 dead in Uighur riots

URUMQI, China (AFP) – China said Tuesday at least 156 people were killed when Muslim Uighurs rioted in the restive region of Xinjiang in some of the deadliest ethnic unrest to hit the country in decades.

The violence in the regional capital Urumqi on Sunday involved thousands of people and triggered an enormous security crackdown across Xinjiang, where Uighurs have long complained of repressive Chinese rule.

“People are staying inside, the best thing for you is to go back to your hotel, that will be safe,” a businessman told AFP near Urumqi’s bazaar district, the scene of much of the violence.

In a sign tensions were still running high, state media reported that police had dispersed more than 200 “rioters” on Monday evening as they gathered at the main mosque in Kashgar, a city in western Xinjiang on the ancient Silk Road.

Police believed people were “trying to organise more unrest” in other cities in the vast mountainous and desert region that borders Central Asia, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Jihad in China

Is China a natural ally in the war on terror? Yes. An Islamist insurgency is raging in China. China, though, has generally suppressed any news of this insurgency. Official statistics put the death toll at 160 over the past 10 years in at least 260 seperate incidents, but the count is probably higher than that. Much higher.

Last month we brought you word of a suicide bomber blowing up a bus in China (images and story here). While that act of terrorism was probably unrelated to the jihad being waged against Beijing, it did spur me to look into the matter. Days after the bombing, an old video was posted at a forum I frequent made by terrorists linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda who operate in China's East Turkistan (known as Xinjiang in Chinese) region. The video was apparently produced in Afghanistan, which borders East Turkistan, and was a call to arms against the Communist regime. The video was almost identical to a number of al Qaeda videos made around the same time.

This website, run by the 'East Turkistan Information Center', is a good source of information, but may have ties to the East Turkistan Liberation Organization. It is noteworthy that East Turkistan may have been the original Islamic state. The Islamic Republic of East Turkistan was establlished in 1933 and survived only three years. But this Islamic Republic was established 45 years before a similar state was established in Iran.

Today, China ran a rare story about it's internal problems with radical Islamists. Xinhua:

7. That situation will probably change as the Chinese central government continues to oppress Muslims..
...in the western part of the country.

But historically, China has not overtly aided repressive regimes that torture and murder Muslims, nor has it invaded and occupied one or more Muslim countries. They've simply not invited the resentment and anger from Muslims that the West has.

I'm trying to think of the last time there was what the press would call a "serious terror threat" (attempt or actual event) that didn't involve the perpetrators using suicide tactics. Certainly bot of the aborted airline attempts were suicide missions, as were Mumbai attacks.

It isn't clear to me how the the threat of summary execution would have much influence on a suicide attacker.

26. Chinese persecution of muslim minorities has not been addressed by AQ
because China would ruthlessly hunt them down and execute them - just like they do to anyone or any group that opposes their authority.

and...the Chinese Central government would retaliate further against those minorities.

Not a good play for AQ

29. I can accept that to some degree
But what you seem to be saying is that their police are more effective than ours. I would not dispute that because they have the advantage of being able to imprison people categorically without actually having to prove a case against them.

However, we have laws in this country to deal with people who are planning terror plots. Maybe we aren't as ruthless as the Chinese, but my sense is that it is not the laws that have failed us. In 9-11 there were numerous opportunities for a really diligent FBI to have detected, tracked, and arrested many of the players who acted on Sep 11, and to do so legally.

In America's free market we out-source, privatize and short sell bogeymen for obscene profits. Being keen on establishing restaurants on-or-near vibrant trade routes and waters, it wouldn't surprise me to find out China invented the Business Lunch Special too

And they're hard core--they don't mess around with a facility like Gitmo. They just take their asses back in the alley after a thirty minute trial and shoot them all dead!

Meanwhile we appear weak to the terrorists. They see all the hand wringing and pearl clutching over how we treat them and it looks like we're easier to manipulate. We fret and worry because they hate us, we wonder what we did wrong and what we can do better.

Which isn't to say we shouldn't be trying to be as moral as possible.

WHat does AQ want?

1. TO take over Saudi Arabia - their holy land. China has no troops in arabia. We do.

2. Take over all lands once controlled by the old Caliphate. Israel is merely the nearest.
China proper was never part of the caliphate

3. Expand the caliphate to the entire earth. Chinese then convert or die.

39. They do
But the thing to consider is that most of our fears are concocted by those who wish to make us fearful.

Yeah, too, there is LIHOP/MIHOP for the one biggie that launched the WOT.

When you think of it, why was there just one big attack like what happened here? Was it because someone in our government DID imagine that it could happen, and not a few dirt dobbers in Afghanistan?

Which is more likely?
That the CIA could not imagine, but that a few cave dwellers could?
OR that the CIA types could, and the cave dwellers couldn't?

Why hasn't the Royal family of Saudi Arabia not been airplaned like the WTC?

Why not the Israelis? Neither have half the air defenses we do. But they haven't been airplaned.
