Should the FCC fine everyone attending the Kentucky / Louisville game?
I'm watching it now.

The whole damn crowd is expressing its displeasure with the referees by chanting

BULLSHIT
BULLSHIT
BULLSHIT

How am I going to explain this to my non-existent kids?

The poor Louisville players were so distracted they let the lead slip away.

1. no. but that wouldn't be the issue. its whether the broadcaster should be fined
The FCC has never, nor could it ever, fine an individual (or individuals) for what they say on tv. They can and have sought to fine stations. FWIW, I think they've been wrong in fining stations.

2. I didn't ask what the FCC could do. I asked what it should do

How is CBS supposed to control what 20,000 people do?

4. and I pointed out that the FCC has no authority the people who appear on television
Edited on Sat Jan-02-10 05:36 PM by onenote
so the FCC should not do anything to those people.

I also happen to think they shouldn't do anything to the stations (who in theory, could use a delay and cut away when something "indecent" is said on the air, although I don't think they should have to do that)

5. because it's on a delay
of a few seconds, and they can mute the crowd. heck, Comcast SportsNet has done it at Maryland-Duke games, they'll even white out the "duck fuke" chant *which was debuted after they muted out the real one)

6. Maryland fans should be muted as a matter of general principle
Remember the ACC Tourney Semi-finals in 84?

They started chanting that stupid AIR BALL chant at a Wake player.

The Duke section stood up, pointed at the Maryland section and chanted AIR HEADS.

I LOLed

8. Ask the FCC that...
For some reason they think that every event should be on a delay and the guy with his or her finger on the censor trigger should be on the ball constantly and never, ever miss a single utterance of a word that would completely destroy the lives of our precious children. (Never mind that they've already heard worse from either their parents or their peers...)

7. Have you watched (listened) to an NBA game recently?
It's loaded with four letter words, by the players.

I'm fine with it, but I'm sure there are some who are not.

12. Some states have laws against badgering refs
And yes the violator can be fined. Do they have that law in Kentucky? I might tune in to see what would happen if they tried to ticket an entire stadium.

25. Who pays cash for UK tickets?
You have to give a boat load of money to the school to be eligible to buy them.

I'm sure there's a paper trail.

Unless you owned a ticket and scalped it.

Or maybe loaned it to a buddy.

Not sure about how they handle student tickets though.

26. You have to prove that each person individually
contributed to the violation. That's Tens of thousands of individual cases. On top of that, most of those cases would bre impossible to prove. Had I been there, I doubt I would have been participating. I'm not a person to yell "Bullshit" at the top of my lungs in public.

Including myself. I swear the crowd shouted "BULLSHIT" so many times you could hear it across town.

22. Happens All The Time...
I remember a high school game back in 1973 where that happened...it was so loud the refs issued a "technical" on the fans and nearly forfeited the game. We were doing the radio and there wasn't much we could do to overcome the noise...took a couple commercial breaks and had the guy at the studio read some scores, but several minutes of "fuck you ref" want over 50,000 watts. One listener did complain and we got a nasty letter from the FCC...that was it.

We found out that covering sports is like a news event...you can't control what's going on, unlike a scripted halftime show. Thus if "shit happens", it's outside of the operator's control.

Anyway, FCC fines are a joke. Few are ever collected...they get appealed and the FCC usually doesn't like to go to court.

28. When I went to HS way back in time...
...the student section didn't like the long count the refs were giving the opposing team as they were bringing the ball up the court. So we started doing our own 10-count based on actual seconds.

A technical was called, and forfeiture was threatened. A good time was had by all.

29. well, the FCC is okay with adjectives derived from the "F" word... so
why would they have any objection to BULLSHIT?

ref: http://web.archive.org/web/20031104002541/http://research.yale.edu/lawmeme/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1249

But, I think I get your point... (hey, I'm nearly 60... many/most of the fans are likely 1/2 my age or less... changin' times, I suppose?).
