Federal agents take custody of man arrested with bombs, assault weapons

The New Jersey man accused in October of having homemade bombs and assault weapons in his possession is now facing federal weapons charges, including possession of machine guns and another bomb.

Mark Stephen Carron has been removed from the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center and taken to Florida to face federal charges that he was in possession of at least two rifles alleged to have been altered into fully automatic weapons.

The 47-year-old was arrested in Orangeburg County early on Oct. 27 after police got a tip that a man had assault weapons in his vehicle.

Filed in the United States District Court, the complaint details an investigation stemming from a traffic stop that federal agents say led to Carron.

On Aug. 27, a Sumter County (Florida) deputy stopped a white Chevrolet Impala around 12:24 a.m. that was allegedly driving without headlights and weaving in the road. The deputy said he spotted several items that could be used in a burglary.

“A consensual search of the vehicle produced several additional items, including two AR-15 ... Sporter 223 rifles from the trunk of the vehicle,” the complaint states. “Four semi-automatic handguns were also found in the trunk of the vehicle.”

A bulletproof vest and “several hundred rounds of ammunition” were found as well, according to the complaint.
