Hunters in Russia's Far East have shot and killed one of the last seven surviving female Amur leopards living in the wild, WWF said on Monday, driving the species even closer to extinction.

Last week environmentalists said there were only between 25 and 34 Amur leopards -- described as one of the most graceful cats in the world -- still living in the wild.

At least 100 are needed to guarantee the species' survival which depends upon female leopards breeding. There are more male leopards in the wild than female because cats tend to breed males when under stress, WWF said.

"Leopard murder can only be provoked by cowardice or stupidity, in this case most likely by both," Pavel Fomenko, WWF's biodiversity coordinator in Russia's Far East said in a statement.

A hunter shot the leopard through the tail bone. It tumbled over and was then beaten over the head with a heavy object, WWF said. Amur leopards have not been know to attack humans.

Environmentalists have urged the Russian government to introduce tighter controls on its national parks in the Far East to crack down on leopard hunting.

1. After seeing Planet Earth, I truly understand animal rights activists and
their over-the-top actions like throwing paint on people wearing leopard coats and such. These are beautiful, precious creatures. I hope they survive.

10. I thought that name looked familiar.
I saw the Planet Earth episode with these animals. It was a major accomplishment that they were even filmed in the wild, now this!

29. They filmed snow leopards AND amur leopards
because I thought they were saying "amor." Both are beautiful animals, and this is really a shame.

...just the most incredibly self-destructive critter that ever existed on this planet.

We're done for and we're the culprit. No meteors needed.

4. Our habits as a species remind me of locusts,
of course we don't have another planet to replace this one, after we've consumed Earth as if there were no tomorrow.

31. Hell, at least the locusts lay eggs that don't hatch until the food grows back.
We're much more prone to extinction than they are.

6. Someone should go and paint their coats so they won't be as valuable.
I wonder if the hunters are indigenous people who don't know any better. And if so who is putting them up to this?

21. Poachers ARE hunters
Hunters have a bad name because they kill innocent, defenseless, sentient beings with guns.

23. No, poachers are CRIMINALS! Period. There is no other way to frame it
Hunting is a rite of passage for many a young boy or girl, even today. Hunting is as old as man himself. It can almost be described as a primal urge for some.

HUNTERS buy licenses, permits, pay taxes and follow rules and regulations. We also provide valuable conservation dollars with the taxes that we pay.

POACHERS kill animals illegally, out of season, without proper permits and without regard to the rule of law in general.

These ARE NOT hunters. They are criminals. Period. Deal with it.

26. With all due respect,
as per definition, POACHERS ARE HUNTERS. They just HAPPEN to be hunting creatures illegally.

35. Sorry, I'll just have to disagree with you on that.
Poachers are CRIMINALS who choose to kill animals illegally. What part of that is so hard to understand? By whose definition are you going by?

24. In some parts of the US deer and hogs get way too overpopulated,
and hunting is needed to bring the population down. Killing a leopard is horrible, or any endangered species for that matter. But leopards kill poor defenceless deer as well.

33. Sure, them and dogs, housecats, horses, cattle,
many species of plants, fish, birds, invertebrates, etc. etc.

And the we made many of the megafauna species around the globe extinct. I can't fault our ancestors for that-- that was the way they evolved to make a living. But we need to stop changing our environment now before it's too late.

27. This argument is weak
Why do you think deer populations are too high?

Leopards do not kill poor defenseless deer in the same manner we kill them. That is an absurd analogy.

Poaching = Hunting, with a catch.

13. This is the sort of useless crap you can make with leopard skins:
"...Many months before the car was built a Detroit furrier was commissioned to find the perfect specimens. This quest was fulfilled when he brought the 187 finest skins in the country to his establishment. After a careful examination it was determined that fourteen approached the high quality of this car as closely as could be obtained. Fur experts then studied the skins for many days to arrive at an exact match and perfect laying of each piece."

The 1953 Cadillac Debutante Special Edition:

"At the New York show, in January, the ladies (below) could not keep their hands of the leopard skin
upholstery; this required the permanent presence of an usher to keep the fur brushed smoothly"

..sure- its from another era, but that's just fuggin' wrong.
