Bush Reiterates Support for Gonzales

By DAVID STOUT and DIANA JEAN SCHEMO
Published: April 23, 2007

WASHINGTON, April 23 — President Bush strongly reiterated his support for Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales today, declaring that Mr. Gonzales’s testimony on Capitol Hill last week had increased his confidence in him.

“The attorney general went up and gave a very candid assessment, and answered every question he could possibly answer, honestly answer, in a way that increased my confidence in his ability to do the job,” Mr. Bush said.

The president’s comments, at a brief question and answer session in the Oval Office, came a day after Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said that Mr. Gonzales’s failure to step down was “no doubt, bad for the Justice Department.”

Mr. Specter’s comments, made on the television program “Fox News Sunday,” reflected a growing lack of support for Mr. Gonzales among key Republicans on Capitol Hill as he faces accusations that the dismissals of eight United States attorneys were politically motivated.<snip>

4. actually for gonzo, mission accomplished.
it didn't matter if he looked complicit or incompetent, as long as he didn't finger Bush or Rove.

9. I actually think this is setting up Gonzales to bow out gracefully
Bush says he is a good guy and did nothing wrong, Gonzo isues a press release saying that while he appreciates the President's support, it it in the best interest of the nation that he resign.

An endorsement and no resignation (i.e., digging in this heels) sets up a subpoena of Rove and Meirs and an imunity deal for Goodling and sampson.

Specter, Graham, Sessions and Coburn are proobably a bit bewildered. They will back the issuance because they are all expressing how poorly AG did on Thursday and they want the truth to come out as well.

10. We Should LIve So Long
No, as long as Gonzo plugs up and destroys the Justice Dept., he's doing the job he was told to do. As long as he keeps Congress fuming and frustrated, he's doing the job he's told to do.

He's going to have to be impeached and removed. Don't settle for less.

13. Incompetance is regrettably not a crime
ANd thus far he has only proven that as indisputable. Get me a smoking gun and I will pick up an impeachment pitchfork myself

12. Impeach Gonzales!!
The House should immediately introduce articles of impeachment against Gonzales.
There are likely enough votes in the Senate to remove Gonzales from office.

18. Obstruction of Justice
His random firings of UA Attorneys stopped many a criminal prosecution in its tracks. We got the crimes--the real question is, do we have the will and the votes in Congress?

17. Impeach, yes!
We don't want him to step down and fade away into oblivion, thereby getting away with all he has done. He needs to be impeached.

16. "increased my confidence in his ability to do the job,”
well, since it's pretty apparent that Gonzalez's "job" is covering Bush's ass, that seems an accurate assessment...
