Which was originally called "Pete's Super Submarines." I was thinking that a few sandwiches would have been welcome. :9

If there are terrorists testing for weak spots, this might indicate a problem in that airport?

25. My experience at Schiphol is that you go through security at your boarding gate
It's been 2 years since I last flew from Schiphol ... but that's how it worked then, which means you have to go through security again even when you are on a connecting flight.

That means the lines are horrible: everyone for a big international flight is there at once, and once you get through, you're stuck at the gate (forget that coffee, newspaper, or ... the bathroom, unless you want to wait another half hour in the line all over again).

26. A spokeswoman for either Schinpol or the dutch govt was quoted
as saying that transferring passengers do not face the same scrutiny as others and that there was only so much that can be done. I read it in a UK newspaper and it jumped out. Perhaps she has no clue as to procedures but she stated that the bomber wouldn't have gone thru a rigorous check.

27. KLM says differently
Edited on Sun Dec-27-09 05:36 PM by frazzled
At Schiphol, all passengers, including transfer passengers, will be subjected to an extensive security check at the gate (previously, this security check was only done immediately after the passport control). Consequently, to avoid delays, you are requested to be at the gate on time:

For flights in Europe: 30 minutes prior to departure
For intercontinental flights: 60 minutes prior to departure

http://extra.klmtransfer.schiphol.nl/web/show/id=156607/langid=42

So there is no difference between whether you are a passenger on a connecting flight or whether you originate your trip at Schiphol. Perhaps she meant this guy was continuing on a flight that merely stopped at Schiphol? In that case, he probably only would have been checked on boarding at the airport in, what was it, Lagos? I hear they only had a broken down xray machine there.

My recollection at Amsterdam is that you first have to go to the gate and be interviewed, and then you pass through xray, metal detection, etc. This all occurs at the specific gate for your flight. And they aren't kidding about being at the gate (not the airport, but the gate) at least 1 hour before flight departure. It will take that long.

Also, read this account from an American who was on the flight (he originated in Uganda):

At 6 a.m. CET, I had arrived in Amsterdam. It's a beautiful airport, just as you would imagine the Dutch would design it, boxy and metallic architecture, silver roofs and granite floors with bright yellow signs marking the terminals extending from central hubs in every direction. Orderly and calm, the opposite of my chaotic life in Uganda. At Amsterdam we went through security, and what seemed like the time was good security. At the gate everyone was interviewed by a team of around 10 personal screeners, who asked us a battery of questions in quick succession. This was something I had only experienced at Tel-Aviv airports and it came as quite a surprise, but one that I welcomed. After personal screening we passed through metal detectors and a baggage X-ray. Even though I had all the change out of my pockets, cell phones, and belt removed I still set off the detector (perhaps the rivets in my jeans). As soon as that happened I was frisked so thoroughly by the young Dutch security guard that I began to wonder if he was enjoying himself. Later on when I read the news reports I realized that if Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab had the explosives stashed in his underwear, even if he had been thoroughly frisked the only way the guard would have noticed anything is if he literally put his hands down the guys pants, and searched his groin.

28. I am aware of those because I was looking for what I had read.
Like I said perhaps she absolutely had no clue what goes on at the airport but she stated in no uncertain terms that a search for transferring passengers is not as rigorous. Are people now trying to backpeddle? I don't know. But the guy got through so the check was less than adequate. Furthermore the security check didn't catch the fact he didn't have luggage other than a carryon which should have raised alarms given that he was planning a 2 week stay in the US.
