Soldiers in Afghanistan Using iPhone App to Kill Taliban Fighters
Source: Appmodo

Soldiers in Afghanistan are using a 29.99 iPhone app created from computer game technology to kill Taliban fighters.

BulletFlight helps sharpshooters work out how the wind and the rotation of the Earth will affect their bullet – and even predicts the wounds the enemy will suffer if it hits him. Snipers are using the ballistics program downloaded on to their iPhones to target the enemy over long distances.

Allied forces already use adapted Xbox 360 video game controllers to pilot robotic vehicles.

They are also making cheap supercomputers using chips from PS3 consoles to develop new kinds of radar. And British experts at BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Airbus and the Williams Formula 1 motor racing team are working on a joint project using computer games consoles to test new gadgets.

Stuart McDougall of BAE, which is developing 3D graphics technology from the PS2 to power the next wave of military engineering designs, said: “Historically the military have invested in developing technology to meet their specific requirements.

“This technology has then filtered down to everyone else.

“But, increasingly, modern consumer gadgets are so powerful and so highly competitive that they’re often ahead of the game – and much cheaper to buy in and adapt.” Anyone can download BulletFlight, which was developed from games software for military use. It costs 3.99 for a basic version or 29.99 for the full program.

14. Bullshit
to the "if you don't have a pony..." comment.

Any of us are free to comment on any subject affecting this nation at any time, whether we are directly involved or not. What a completely ridiculous notion.

17. It wasn't my kid
It was my husband, and thank God, he's back now.

But even if he hadn't been there, I would still have every right to say whatever I want about the wars, as would you, as would anyone else. Do Democrats in Congress have no right to talk about the war if they don't have loved ones there? As I said, bullshit. If that's the case, then shut your piehole about ANYTHING that doesn't directly affect you - goose/gander and all.

I honor your kid for his/her service, but I doubt that anyone put a gun to his/her head and force him/her to sign up. So drop the martyrdom act.

I assume the app does all that range-finding stuff the old guys did in their heads.

I guess I figured there was already an olive-drab gizmo out there.

28. Disagree!
I am always amazed at the resourcefulness of American youth. If they find a tool and adapt it to their use I say great. As to using that tool to dispatch Tali ban, that is okay. The Tali ban have no love for us. These are the folks who destroy schools for girls because their enlightened beliefs dictate that women should not be educated.

18. Taliban shouldn't have invaded the US colony of Afghanistan
We've owned that country for a 1000 years. The Taliban has no right to try to settle on our god given land.

Somebody tell them Talibs about somethin' called the Monroe Doctrine, baby.

21. The effect of the wind and rotation of the earth
People have been calculating the effect of those factors on ballistic flight for centuries. You could do it with a couple of excel functions. I imagine snipers in the trenches of WWI got by with a pocket sized printed table, if they bothered at all.

As for the effect of a bullet on a human body, that just sounds like extraneous gore. Surely a sniper would have a pretty good idea of this anyway.

No doubt the Taliban also has access to these apps. Perhaps the mafia and Mexican drug lords too.

26. If it's cheap and easy to do, the Taliban and others will be doing it soon
The cited article is full of the basic attitude that poor people in developing countries are basically too stupid to figure stuff like this out.
