VATICAN CITY — A woman jumped the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he walked down the main aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass on Thursday, a Vatican spokesman said.

The Rev. Ciro Benedettini said the 82-year-old pope quickly got up and was unhurt. As the pope's procession was making its way toward the main altar gasps rang out through the public and a commotion could be seen among the clergymen surrounding Benedict. The procession came to a halt and bodyguards rushed to the trouble spot.

Benedettini said the woman who pushed the pope appeared to be mentally unstable and had been arrested by Vatican police. He said she also knocked down Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who was taken to hospital for a check up

2. She got a Cardinal and a Pope @ the same time?
It's a miracle

I wonder if we showed her Joe Lieberman & Karl Rove's pictures if we could turn her powers into something good?

7. A lot of "appeared to be mentally unstable" coming out of events over there lately
The last three or four in a row I've heard of out of the region, at least, all included that phrase. I'm starting to wonder whether it's actually the case or if it's becoming a reflexive claim towards anyone who goes after someone in power there again.

14. Not surprised with the hate speech so many use at religion. Hate is ok though in such a case
As long as the hate goes to people we don't like it is allowed....

19. Sometime you might check out the hate speech coming out of the Vatican
against gays and against women who want to serve as priests and against women's reproductive health workers and against nuns who are trying to carry on the works of JC and the boys.

Might broaden your perspective somewhat.

"Pope Innocent" was just a name, yanno?

16. I don't like the Pope but I am not going to applaud what this woman did
The Pope is getting on in years and she could have injured him. I don't think I ould find that funny if that happened.

18. What the hell is going on with intruders at prominent public events?
:wow:

Sheesh, first there were the Salahis intruding in the White House state dinner a couple days before Thanksgiving. No injuries/deaths, but Congress is investigating and considering charging the Salahis for what they did.

Then, a mentally ill man named Massimo Tartaglia throws a sculpture at Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi, severely injuring his face. Tartaglia is currently in jail, I suppose.

And now this woman, this...erhm...bitch is scraping the bottom of the barrel right here.
