Thieves steal treasured holiday decoration
With 16 grandchildren, Mona Payne loves to make a big deal out of every season. An outdoor Christmas tableau, a mock graveyard for Halloween — she even marks summer with a dining room display of sand and sea shells.
So the theft Tuesday night from her rose garden yard of one of her treasured holiday decorations — a 3-foot-tall plastic Santa — came as a particular blow. to the San Jose woman.
Especially since just a few days before, someone dumped a plastic baby Jesus in her yard.
Payne appealed to the Mercury News in hopes of finding the rightful owner of the baby Jesus and getting back her Santa.
She'd called police, who promised to send out extra patrols but lack the staff to investigate the theft. Tuesday evening, as Payne was leaving for dinner, she noticed her Santa had fallen over.
