Is there a DU type site for progressive liberals?
A lot of DU discussion now seems to devolve into "would you rather McCain won?" type silliness. I supported Obama, and hope he succeeds - but I still feel entitled to disagree with his stated positions.

I am a progressive liberal who has always vote Dem (since I started voting in 1975), but the DLC has won the battle and the Dem party is all but unrecognizable to me now.
Teddy fought the good fight, and there are still a few who do - but far more do not.

1. Before last year's election I thought this site was one. Now, not so much.

3. Obama won. I don't get why people are putting DU down and saying it isn't
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 11:42 AM by xultar
progressive. Obama was DU's progressive's favorite from the start. If a person didn't support Obama they were just about ran the fuck off.

So, I don't get it. DU's pirmary pick won. WTF is the problem?

4. Xultar, you are very right about people having been run off for not supporting Obama
But some of them were true progressives who saw the writing on the wall long before the rest of us did and tried to warn us. People on this board, especially mysterious handles which have disappeared, called them racists for not supporting Obama.

6. I know I was.
I've assumed Obama was another DLC-type fraud since the 2004 Convention, when the corporate media clowns universally pronounced him the 'new star of the Democratic Party'.

10. Lord, I thought I was the only one.
I listened to that speech, heard a bunch of platitudes with no substance, watched the media reaction - and realized he'd already been picked by the establishment. I felt like the only person on DU that wasn't fawning all over him in 04.

I actually saw the speech the following day, after everyone was crowing about how great it had been. I watched it and... wondered what the hell they were wetting themselves about. Not to mention that on every other subject, the corporate media's consensus opinion had been regarded as untrustworthy and agenda-driven around here.

:P

Anyway, pleased to finally meet a you, fellow cynic.

24. The media was the key. The advice for Democratic voters is this:
If the media picks your candidate and hypes this candidate up as something he or she is not, run, run, RUN away from that candidate.

9. They almost ran my ass off. I was on the list of people who they wanted banned,
They even called me racist.

Now they are complaining that DU isn't progressive enough. I wonder if that has something to do with the people they ran off?

Well I guess we'll never know.

33. It's interesting how inane it got.
To call you racist would be hilarious if it weren't tragic.

There are certain people still on this board who ran people off. I watched it. I didn't post for a long time because of it.

11. actually, most DU polls had Kucinich as the no.1 pick.
DU became a lot more conservative after Obama won the election, and the forums started to be filled with paid plants from the DLC.:(

13. Obama was not in any way shape or form DU's favorite progressive.
Just go back to the primaries and take a good look at the polls around here. DK and Edwards had most of the support.

19. Wow, you have a short memory
the pro-Hillary contingent were very vocal and quite numerous, they just chose to remain in some delusional fantasy-land and cling to the impossible hope that she might somehow win in the face of Obama's insurmountable delegate lead. (And I seriously doubt that Clinton would have been markedly more progressive than Obama; Bill certainly wasn't.)

26. Absolute bullshit.
That "Obama was DU's progressive's favorite from the start."

As this clearly shows; these polls were run every week until the first primary vote, and the results were always similar. This is the poll with the largest # of votes:

. . .DU is a big tent and there is a strong diversity of opinion here. There are significant informal caucuses of every Democratic stripe here.

32. No, it's an acknowledgement that there are different sorts of liberals.
Neoliberalism (clinton/Obama/DLC) is a very different thing than the green party sort of liberalism. I think progressive liberalism is an attempt to distinguish from neoliberalism.

Some linguistic purists would avoid the use of "progressive" there because of an implication that all progress is good progress, (development is good), but when a person uses it this way, I get what they mean.

A few years back I didn't get the difference between liberalism (neoliberalism) and socialism. That was a significant awakening for me.

23. well if you want to get into dictionary definitions
then those supporting Obama's approach (or any approach that makes some progress but not necessarily all at once) "progressive"; and the all-or-nothing approach as "radical".

So the question would be, where is the radical liberal site or has DU become it?

20. DU.
If by "progressive liberals" you mean "those who oppose the current bill at all costs." Anyone who reads DU now, knows that people in that category far outnumber everyone else.

An addition. Not a division at all.

Just wait. I promise it will be positive.

Not at all about dividing the people or taking away DU users from this site.

It is about empowerment.

You will see.
