"Hero" Dog Takes Bullets During Home Invasion Robbery

A man and his dog were wounded Wednesday in a shooting during a home-invasion robbery in the Laurel Canyon area. The robbery and shooting in the 8200 block of Mannix Drive happened around 1:40 a.m. The family says they have their dog, a five year old boxer mix named Aslan, to thank for their lives.

The dog came to the rescue when three men and a woman showed up at the family's home to rob it. Police said the robbers forced a man to open the home's safe while his wife and children slept in another room. After grabbing large amounts of cash, the intruders shot the man. However, it was Aslan who took the brunt of the bullets. The dog was shot in his ear, both front legs and through the middle of his body.

Aslan is lucky to be alive, said the Glendale veterinarian who performed emergency surgery on the dog. Aslan isn't out of the woods yet, and will have to undergo more surgeries to fully repair his injuries. The man was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the neck and released, authorities said.

A number of witnesses called 911 and said they heard several gunshots, then saw a white Dodge Charger leaving the scene. Officers arriving at the scene spotted a car matching the description and chased it until the car crashed near Pico Boulevard and Hauser Avenue. The suspects fled on foot, scattering cash as they went. LAPD's Wilshire area patrol, Metropolitan Division and K-9 units were called in to search for the four suspects, who were taken into custody without incident, the LAPD said.

Police recovered evidence at the scene and were searching for the suspects' weapons. The family said the female that was arrested was their former maid, and they fired her several months ago because they thought she was stealing from them. Narcotics officers were at the home late Wednesday, but it remained unclear why.

I'd actually rather be shot than have one of my dogs shot. Much preferable though if only the bad guys got shot and killed.
