Oral Roberts RIP
Oral Roberts died the other day. When he got to Heaven, God spoke with the man of the cloth and said, "OK, get right on it... I didn't have you named Oral for NOTHING!"

2. As an atheist
I often wonder what such folks expect when they reach the pearly gates. If they believed their own hype they'd be shaking in their shoes.

5. They know. Deep down inside, people like Oral Roberts know
Edited on Fri Dec-18-09 02:22 PM by MineralMan
that this life is it. As long as you get enough money and power, it's heaven. After you die, you rot.

Oral Roberts knew, but his livelihood depended on him convincing people otherwise so they'd give him their money.

Don't tell. They all know. The Pope knows. They all know.

10. In the 80s a Mormon used his skills as a counterfeiter to compose
scandalous documents that exposed Joseph Smith as a fraud.

The leaders of the Mormon Church wrote checks for millions of dollars to buy them up and put them in the vault.

This is absolute proof that they in fact know.

Bush believes what he told America. It's his job to lie. He lied. Just because he lied doesn't mean he believed his lies. Of course, Americans are expected to believe them. But then, Americans aren't educated. We're as clueless as early man who believed in the magic gods in the sky. Maybe more clueless.

15. I had a Bishop in the Catholic Church admit to me that he did
not believe any of the supernatural crap, but that he believed that the world would disintegrate into chaos if people did not have religious faith. Of course, I had given him several snifters of brandy to lubricate his tongue. Very interesting.

16. Funny how he still deluded himself into thinking his ilk was necessary.
Well, I guess religion is necessary for this:

17. Well, a guy has to earn a living somehow, I guess.
Selling pie in the sky worked for him, I suppose. He died in 1976. Poor old deceived man.

18. Welcome to DU
and yeah I wonder myself, they know they are crooked, they know they have manipulated seniors into donating their much needed social security, they know they have "sinned before god" so you gotta wonder when he was on his last few minutes if he was crapping in his pants.

I'm usually the type of person not to say anything when someone dies, out of respect to their families but this guy.. meh, fuck him and the fundie train he rode out on.

child I have been here for much longer than you and what I see as liberal compassion makes me sick. As sick as what I have seen from the right. All talk, no real action...childish passions and no real feeling for what is right. Time to grow up

13. Compassion for what?
A crook that ruthlessly and callously played on the fears of the faithful to swindle them collectively out of millions of dollars that they could not afford to give, just so he could live a life of luxury and power? He deserves our compassion just because he died?

Yeah, I'll get right on that. Perhaps we can add Jesse Helms, Jerry Falwell, and Ken Lay (if he is in fact dead) to the list.

26. My comments about Oral Roberts had nothing to do with the political party he was affiliated with.
It had to do with my disgust for him (and people like him), someone who knowingly took advantage of the good faith of so many (very often, poor) people for his own personal gain. Whether he identified as a Republican or a Democrat is irrelevant to me, my disgust for his unchecked greed and corruption would be the same regardless. There was nothing partisan about my comments.

After seeing the damage that people like this cause in our world, it is next to impossible for me to have compassion for Roberts, even in his death. If you feel that makes me a hater, well, so be it.

19. I once watched Old Oral work it.
In summary he gave a sermon about how it was ok to donate your social security check to him, because even if you needed it to buy food and medication God would provide. Jesus fed an army with a fish and a loaf of bread, he healed the sick with the touch of his hand and god will do the same for you if you send your money to me.

This guy was fucking slime, he preyed on the weak and easily manipulated, and he used the money he conned from them to live like a king and built a blasphemous religious empire.

Compassion? Normally I would have it at least for the family but this guy... nope not one fucking iota.

20. I can remember watching him on tv back in the 50's when I was just a kid.
He held services in a big tent at the time and did faith healing at the end of his services. Even then I was very skeptical about those people who could throw away their crutches and dance down the aisle after he "healed" them. The grip he used on their head was very reminiscent of some of the wrestling holds we had seen on Saturday night wrestling. He was quite a showman.

25. I tend to agree ...to a point
I always find it funny when liberals talk a good game...and I tend to agree with ya on most points, even on this one. Personally, I dont really care, but I must point out the inconsistency between liberal moralism and the reveling in this man's death....funny

9. I kinda skimmed this book by his former daughter-in-law
the gist that I got out of it was that he started out as a decent man and then got corrupted by the wealth and power of a TV empire. Not sure what difference that makes in the end, but it made me question my assumption that he started out as a cynical snake-oil salesman.

people like Oral Roberts do too much damage to people and society itself for me ever to consider such a thing. I'm glad he's gone...
