Something mom said in 1984 about politicians:
It was my first year voting and we were driving to the store and talking about Reagan:

"Politicians are like guys in bars, some are better looking and tell you what you want to hear, but in the end they all just want to screw you."

She had said worse before (she sometimes treated political speeches like football games, she would cuss at the TV then change the channel) but that one sticks out in my mind.

I didn't ask her how she knew that about men in bars.....

4. I remember my mother being really upset during watergate
Mom is not one to get overly upset by politics, like her husband and son are. I distinctly remember my mother actually crying while watching watergate coverage. She turned to me and said angrily, "You know, this country started going to hell after they got away with killing Kennedy". I asked her who she thought 'they' where, and she said she didn't know, but never bought the Warren Commission "bullshit".

Mom's never been much for swearing, so I knew she was really upset.

3. My mother tried to tell me the same thing then,
but I didn't listen.

The old adage about your parent(s) getting smarter the older you get certainly proved true in that case.

6. My uncle once said...
"Before the election the politicians kiss your ass. After they get elected, you kiss theirs."

Kinda sums it all up.

10. True, He did die 20 years ago...
he would have updated it if he were sill alive.

He was a tough old Irish-American who had been a life long Democrat and union member and retired from Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh.

I learned a lot from him.

8. my Depression-era grandpa once explained it to me this way
Politicians all mug the workingman, but the nickel's worth of difference between them is that the Republican will rob you of everything, while the Democrat might leave you a nickel to call home.
