by pathetic mewling media people sobbing about how intimidated they were, how they were threatened, leaned on, coerced into going along with it all, afraid of this, afraid of that, worried about their mortgages and their hot-shit jobs and their precious fucking ACCESS. Oh, how utterly MISTREATED they were. FORCED to strap on those presidential kneepads. I didn't see ONE INKLING of coersion throughout.
I always enjoy recalling the story Michael Moore told during a speaking engagement several years ago here in L.A., in which he described an encounter with Katie Couric. He was a guest on the "Today" show, promoting "Fahrenheit 9/11" and something came up about media suppression. The segment ended and they cut to commercial. As they were taking off their microphones, Couric leaned over to him and said something like - "oh, you're SO RIGHT about media suppression," and told him how she herself was bullied - she told him somebody from the vice president's office called the NBC brass to complain about an interview she'd done with some White House person - in which the vp's office goon said the White House didn't like the tone of voice Couric used to conduct the interview. She said she then got a memo from "upstairs" - ordering her to COOL it. Michael Moore said he told her - "WHY don't you SAY SOMETHING about this??? WHY can't you write an op/ed piece about this or something? You're Katie Couric! You're one of three people in this country who can't be fired! Why don't you talk about this?" Her response? "Someday, I will."
Someday.
Yeah, sure, katie. Keep on fiddling while caligula burns the place down more thoroughly than Nero did.
They're ALL gonna get religion after the bushies are out of office and they think the coast is clear. Then you'll see the books about how horribly the media was used, manipulated, stomped on, thwarted, and fucked over. Boo-hoo-hoo. Probably the worst of the worst offenders will all come out with their oh-so-somber tomes about how patently unfair and horrible and near-criminal it was. How they were used, taken-in, made fools of, how they just WANTED SO BADLY to tell you the truth, to bust these assholes but oh, dearie me, they just couldn't! They couldn't! They were AFRAID. They had their mortgages and country club membership dues to pay, after all. And they had their big, fat, hot jobs to protect. So they didn't dare. ASSHOLES.
Let's see - who will it be who cries the crocodile tears? I have a few guesses:
katie couric chris matthews tim "buy my book" russert judy miller matt cooper bob woodward paula zahn larry king mark smith of the AP brian williams tom brokaw charles gibson walter pincus dana milbank norah o'donnell judy woodruff wolf blitzer anderson cooper
You name 'em. Only Helen Thomas will have ANY credibility, assuming she decides to write one. Up til a few weeks ago, I'd have said david gregory but he seems to have strapped on his presidential kneepads since then.
But they WILL be coming out with these books. LONG after they might actually have done any good. WAY too late to make any difference. And I'm sure Oprah will recommend one or two... :eyes:
And there's another one. Oprah. I like many of the things she's done and tried to do, but she's SO uniquely positioned to do something about THIS, to influence HUGE numbers of voters about something as important as the salvation of what's left of our democracy and our Constitution. And she will not answer this call. She could almost singlehandedly heal our country. And she won't.
