Heavy snow and blizzards bury towns across US Midwest
Source: BBC News

Blizzards in the Midwest of the US have brought record snowfalls, burying cars, closing schools and causing power cuts.

Wisconsin declared a state of emergency after getting up to 48cm (19 inches) of snow on Wednesday, and Iowa recorded the worst snowfall for 20 years.

In Illinois, gusts of 80km/h (50mph) created snow drifts of 4.5m (15 ft), the National Weather Service said.

The storm, which is heading eastwards, has been blamed for at least 16 deaths, most in traffic accidents.

3. Yep. But deniers don't read past "global warming" to get to the stonger storms part
They will be out in force pointing to these storms as evidence that there is no 'warming'. The always ignore the fact that the ocean warming and polar melts will bring about really awful storms, winter and summer.

2. The snow isn't the worst of it.
It's the wind and cold that follows. The local shelters have opened a special outreach program for homeless and for those who aren't aware how dangerous the cold is. The police are looking out for people who seem to have no shelter and guiding them to warm places.

Here's the local report:

Warning Description: Wind Chill Advisory

Warning Date: 7:06 am CST on December 10, 2009

WarningSum:...Wind Chill Advisory In Effect Until 11 Am Cst This Morning...

Warning Message:The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued a
Wind Chill Advisory...which is in effect until 11 am CST this
morning.
* Timing: the coldest conditions will be felt until 11 am this
morning.
* Temperatures: temperatures will drop to zero to 5 below zero...
with wind chill readings falling to 15 to 25 below zero.
* Winds: west 15 to 25 mph.
* Impacts: frost bite and possible hypothermia from prolonged
exposure.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills of 20 below zero or
colder. This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if
precautions are not taken. If you must venture outdoors...make
sure you wear a hat and gloves.

8. Here in La Crosse we got 17" and I had to work during and in the storm.
But then here in Wisconsin that is what it does in the winter: snow, and get cold. No surprise there. We had an exceedingly mild November here and my complaint is that we could not ease into winter, but we had a couple of dustings of snow and then got buried.

The long range forecast for the results of climate change here in WI is that in 50 years our winters will be like Iowa and in 100 years our winters here will be like Arkansas is now, but without the hot summers. So for WI the climate change will not be bad, but it will suck for others.
