More Charter School Cheaters
Chavez charter school gave extra time on CSAPs, audit finds

State rules say students with identified special needs may receive time accommodations on the tests. But nearly 87 percent of CCA fifth-graders got time accommodations on the 2008 math test. That compares with just 4.8 percent statewide on the same test.

This went on over three years. I'll bet Chavez isn't on "corrective action", doesn't have to set aside Title I for after school tutoring or transportation to other schools, doesn't have to send letters home talking about how terrible they are, . . . in fact, I remember them being LAUDED by former Gov. Bill Owens as being a school others' should emulate.

Lovely.

1. I'm curious as to how they determined that the extra time didn't make a difference.
But the audit by an independent company determined additional time on the Colorado Student Assessment Program did not result in improved scores at the Pueblo school.

3. I think they hired this firm.
Hernandez was removed from his board when they found he was making $100,000 MORE than the highest paid superintendent in the state. With all that money, they hired a firm to find some vindication. He's been claiming that for a while. But even basic common sense says if you give almost all of your kids "significantly" more time to finish their math test for THREE YEARS, it's going to change your scores.

2. Why does Hernandez feel
"vindicated?"

Where is the proof he's referring to?

Charter schools aren't the only, or best, path to innovation. And considering a school "innovative" because it doesn't follow the rules the rest of us do doesn't make them "better."

But then, you knew that. ;)
