" As you may or may not be aware of, the Frente Amplio (Broad Front) Party has won again in Presidential elections this last weekend in Uruguay. The winner José "Pepe" Mujica, a flower farmer and ex Tupamaro rebel from the Operation Condor days in South America has won. This is an especially sweet victory for a resistance fighter who spent 14 years in fascist political prisons, mostly in the "hole" in isolation as special torture for his position in the resistance group."

President - the winner - José "Pepe" Mujica

1. Hopefully, he stays true to his word
I remember the joy and happiness of one night in November 2008 and again in late January 2009.

How quickly that faded.

7. Uragauy has the most progressive government in South America
He was re-elected against odds that he'd lose. I like the fact that he'll keep working (at link).

Our pols should have to make their own money the honest way instead of "donations."

5. RE -elected and they said he'd lose
That's quite a story. If you go to the link, they've got interesting stuff on Operation Condor and
the travails and suffering progressive leaders went through just because they fought for social
justice. Inspiring!

15. My wife is from Uruguay
She would see El Pepe riding a tiny motor scooter around Montevideo because he would lend his car to those
who needed it.

Operation Condor in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Condor

"Operação Condor), was a campaign of political repression involving assassination and intelligence operations officially implemented in 1975 by the governments of the Southern Cone of South America. The program aimed to eradicate alleged socialist and communist influence and ideas and to control active or potential opposition movements against the participating right-wing governments. Due to its clandestine nature, the precise number of deaths directly attributable to Operation Condor will likely never be known, but it is reported to have caused over sixty thousand <1>, possibly even more.<2><3><4>

"Condor's key members were the governments in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. The United States participated in a supervisory capacity, with Ecuador and Peru joining later in more peripheral roles.<5>"

16. That "Operation Condor" at the link is something isn't it?
Can you imagine the arrogance of starting a program like that and the pure sociopathy involved in
inflicting that level of violence? And we paid for it!

13. Best news NOT reported in the MSM.
The populist reforms sweeping across Latin America gives me hope for the World.

I'm praying they quickly migrate to El Norte.
We could use some democracy here.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone

14. The desire for populist reform has to come first.
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 12:16 PM by redqueen
Let's see how the electorate votes in 2010... if they elect typical republicans (or don't support challengers to non populist dems in significant numbers), then we'll know the desire is not here yet.
