Are there any threads posted in the last month
That don't have a post in the sub thread complaining about un recs?

It seems to be obligatory these days.

1. I just unreced this thread so I can post the obligatory "I see the unrecs have already started"
We're really screwing with the paradigm now! This is fun!

4. Nope. I can choose to unrec, rec, or ignore.
I'm in full control. Isn't that amazing? Choices...what a concept!

12. Does it need to be controlled?
I never look at the number of recs before reading a thread anyway. I'm bafled as to why some people (always the same people) seem to think this is such a critically important issue.

5. I agree about the sub-threads. I also hale DU for having both options...
I've been a part of other forums where only "thanks" or "recs" are allowed and it is really nice to see that this site recognizes the idea to offer options of both.

7. Yup. Seems pretty Democratic of DU, doesn't it?
Everyone can vote, not just those who think a thread is just ducky. It's a winner.

9. The only noticable issue is "unreccing the Author"
When you post a thread and it's unrecced within 20 seconds of hitting "Post Message", you know there was somebody who said "I hate that poster" and unrecced without reading it. That the only "unintended" consequence I've seen. There is some territorial "friends vs. foes" game playing that is entertaining to some.

10. Timing is everything. Many of those you speak of are posts of one or two
sentences, or the title is so offensive it doesn't matter what the OP says.

I use both the rec and unrec freely. I also sometimes hit the wrong one, though once clicked it can't be unclicked.

I personally rarely look at the author of an OP or even the names of posters. I have nearly all avatars and sig pics blocked so I have no peripheral stimuli to indicate who it is, I have to actually look at the name and I don't.

That being said, if I'm in a discourse with someone, I will often go back and investigate their recent posts on threads to determine if it is someone I want to take a more thoughtful, analytical look at the discourse or simply blow them off.

11. People can't accept the fact the someone might not like what they say.
The part that drives me nuts is the notion that it's "suppressing their voice" or something equally asinine. It's not like your thread gets removed.

The DU topic that keeps on train wrecking.
Some advice:

if you start a thread regarding the unrec function, be prepared for it to be massively unrec'd.

If you whine why one of your own threads didn't just make us all squirm with delight, then be prepared to be unrec'd.

If you come across with an attempt to sound reasonable regarding the unrecing of one of your posts, be prepared to be unrec'd.

If you shout, "I'M BEING SILENCED", be prepared to be unrec'd.

If you feign ignorance as to why your post was unrec'd, be prepared to be unrec'd

And lastly...

If you start a thread regarding unrec, be prepared to be unrec'd, flamed mercilessly, and alerted to the mods as being a freep, troll, moron, in need of a pizza, etc.

Just a few of the simple facts of posting about the unrec function.

Cheers!

I should explain that when I say I'm unreccing an unrec, it means that I'm reccing to negate an unrec.

Feel better now?
